Pokemon is one of the world’s largest franchises, with a media universe that includes trading cards, video games, feature films, and several television series. Early anime and games focused primarily on the relationship between Pokemon and their trainers. Several series follow Ash Ketchum’s journey to become a Pokemon Master, traveling across the land with his trusty pocket monsters like Pikachu.
But pokemon serve various service roles outside the battlefield. For example, Chansey served as Nurse Joy’s assistant over multiple generations. Recent Pokemon media explores these lesser-known aspects of poke-life. For instance, the Netflix series Pokemon Concierge tells the story of a spa resort exclusively for pokemon. An upcoming anime will examine a first-generation pokemon, Dragonite, who delivers letters on behalf of the postal service.

What is the New Pokemon Anime About?
The latest Pokemon anime, Dragonite and the Postman, is an emotional story about a young girl named Hana who receives an unaddressed letter from a Dragonite postal worker. With her trusty poke-companion, Fuecoco, Hana searches for the letter’s sender, a young boy named Rio.
When Hana and Fuecoco find Rio, they learn he intended to send his father a birthday card. However, Rio’s father is working abroad in the Kanto region. What’s more, that birthday is fast approaching. So, it’s up to Hana to collaborate with a network of Dragonite post-emon (like the pun?) to ensure Rio’s father receives the letter in time.
Dragonite and the Postman’s Theme Song is “Paper Airplane” by Evan Call
According to Anime News Network, Dragonite and the Postman’s latest trailer plays a section of the special episode’s theme song, “Kami Hikōki” (Paper Airplane). Suis, the vocalist from the rock duo Yorushika, sings this uplifting tune while accompanied by a joyous full orchestra. During this sequence, fans can view glimpses of the series, including Hana riding on the backs of majestic Dragonite postal workers.
Fans will also hear snippets of dialogue. In one piece of narration, Hana describes the significance of the written word. A rough YouTube translation of this text reveals a message that matches “Kami Hikōki”‘s whimsical tone:
Paper is a mysterious thing. It can amplify your feelings and convey them.
Who is Evan Call?
“Kami Hikōki”‘s composer is Evan Call, an American artist known for his work in Japan. Call studied film scoring at the Berklee College of Music, which explains his masterful command of grand symphonic music. His talents gained the attention of Yōta Tsuruoka of Kyoto Animation, who employed Call’s talents for the series Tokyo ESP and Violet Evergarden.
Evan Call is a decorated musician in the games and anime industries. His work includes entries in the Chaos Rings series and the Netflix anime My Happy Marriage. He won the 2025 Tokyo Anime Award in Sound/Performance for his work in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. In addition to “Kami Hikōki,” Call will compose Dragonite and the Postman’s score.
How Will Dragonite and the Postman Affect Pokemon’s Future?
Dragonite and the Postman is a collaboration between The Pokemon Company and CoMix Wave Films. CoMix Wave Films is known for its fantasy-adventure titles directed by Makoto Shinkai, like Your Name, Weathering with You and Suzume. The special episode will launch on February 27, known as Pokemon Day. Pokemon Day commemorates the anniversary of Pokemon Red and Green’s release in 1996.
Pokemon Day is a significant day for franchise announcements. Many fans anticipate news regarding the upcoming Nintendo Switch title Pokémon Legends: Z-A. However, Dragonite and the Postman’s reception will likely indicate the possibility of similar projects down the line. There’s a chance this special could be the first of many story-driven epics that depart from Pokemon’s action roots.
