Netflix’s Wednesday Season 2 Should Be Darker But Also Funny

Netflix's Wednesday Season 2 Should Be Darker But Also Funny

Summary

  • Jenna Ortega confirmed a darker tone for Wednesday season 2 with more horror elements.
  • To maintain balance, the show needs to include humor in the storyline, especially with key characters.
  • Fans hope the second season retains the witty and eerie humor of Jenna Ortega’s character from the first season.

Netflix‘s Wednesday is coming back this year, and since season 1 premiered in November 2022, there’s been a long wait for the next phase of Jenna Ortega’s character’s story. It’s always a challenge for a show to try something new while keeping fans happy and as invested as they were before. I like that Wednesday Addams will have a stalker as I’m always a fan of a good mystery, and I’m hopeful that Wednesday season 2 will be impressive.

However, as exciting as the new storylines and cast members of Wednesday season 2 are, I want one part of Wednesday season 1 to be included in the new episodes. Otherwise, the show will feel too different, and it won’t be as satisfying.

Wednesday and Smallville are both about young versions of famous, beloved characters and they also share showrunners.

Wednesday Season 2 Needs To Keep Its Sense Of Humor

Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams in Wednesday

In January 2024, Jenna Ortega talked about Wednesday season 2’s tone with E! News and said:

“I’ve received some scripts for the second season and we’re definitely leaning into more horror.”

While I’m happy to see a darker version of Wednesday, I also think the show needs to maintain its strong and sharp sense of humor. The best scenes in Wednesday season 1 feature the Addams Family character cracking jokes and being harsh and sarcastic. Sure, it’s fun to watch her verbally spar with her Nevermore Academy classmates and realize Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) is the Hyde Monster. But Wednesday shines when she can lean into her bitter yet funny personality.

Wednesday season 2 will have a lot of scary plotlines, from Tyler being held at Willowhill psych hospital to Wednesday looking for her stalker. I think there needs to be at least one humorous storyline to balance out the more grim moments. Maybe Wednesday and Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) can work on a project together that involves looking into their family histories, and Wednesday makes a funny discovery about one of her relatives. This would also be a good way to introduce some other Addams Family members or feature the beloved Addams Family mansion.

I’d also love to see other main characters explore their funny side. This includes Enid, who has a sweet and happy-go-lucky personality in Wednesday season 1. Enid could explore her werewolf origins, which would be a funny storyline and allow her to take center stage. I would also be happy to see Wednesday’s charming younger brother Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez) making as many jokes as his older sibling.

What Are Some Of The Funniest Quotes From Wednesday Season 1?

Jenna Ortega in Wednesday

Jenna Ortega’s character has some witty lines in Wednesday season 1, and I hope she has more great dialogue in the second season of the hit Netflix show. Whether or not the character becomes more chaotic, she definitely needs to keep her creepy and hilarious way of looking at the world. One of my favorite scenes is when Tyler Galpin asks Wednesday Addams why she hates her birthday since it’s “a day that’s all about you.” She says:

“Every day is about me. This one just comes with cake and a bad song.”

In another great scene, Wednesday also celebrates her unique personality and says:

“We’re original thinkers, intrepid outliers in this vast cesspool of adolescence.”

While there’s a lot of hype for Wednesday season 2, I think the second season can be just as good, if not better, than the first. But the show needs to ensure that Ortega’s character doesn’t lose her trademark wit and eerie jokes.
