That’s right, if you’ve seen bugs and fish lurking in your travels and you weren’t sure how to get them, it’s with your handy dandy Chain Hook. Here’s everything you need to know about how to use it.

How To Unlock The Chain Hook

You’ll unlock the Chain Hook during Chapter Two, shortly after you’ve been introduced to Bounties and defeated Domingo. You’ll get a call from Julie, and when you meet with her you’ll find she’s ready to make you even more piratey with a proper hook.

At this point, not only can you use the Chain Hook in battle, but you’ll be able to use it to grapple hook points in the environments as well as catch/grab items from your surroundings.

You can only use the Chain Hook while in Sea Dog style.

During combat, you can hold E (PC)/B (Xbox)/Circle (PlayStation) to throw your hook at enemies and then launch yourself towards them and begin your attack.

It’s handy for closing distance quickly, especially for targeting the long-range attackers that tend to stand away from the fray and keep shooting you with pistols.

How To Get Items The Chain Hook

Though your little tiger buddy Goro will bring you various items, you might have wondered why you can see bugs and fish in the environment and yet not be able to interact with them. The answer is the Chain Hook!

Hold LT (R on PC) to enter ‘Search Mode’, which lets you aim with your Chain Hook as well as making any interactable objects glow blue. Once you’ve found your target, press RT (Forward Arrow on PC) to fire your hook to grab your item.

You can also catch fish by swimming in the sea, approaching them, and pressing X (Xbox) / Square (PlayStation)/ Spacebar (PC) to catch them.

Which Items Can You Find With The Chain Hook?

Items you can reach with the Chain Hook include:

  • Bugs (ingredients for cooking)
  • Fish in water (ingredients for cooking)
  • Fruit growing on trees (ingredients for cooking)
  • Magazines (out of normal range)
  • Paper Fortunes (out of normal range)

When it comes to bugs and fish, the quality of them is random so sometimes you might find Silver or Gold variants instead. You can’t tell them what quality they will be before catching them.

How To Grapple To New Areas

With the Chain Hook, you’ll be able to grapple to new areas that you couldn’t access otherwise, such as ledges. You can do this by spotting red hooks in your environment and then using the Chain Hook to target them.

These hooks can give access to shortcuts, or lead you to containers with loot or even treasure.

When you are near a treasure, Noah will alert you so be sure to look around for a hook to claim your booty.
