While DLC for Elden Ring Nightreign sounds like an obvious move, it invites comparisons to Shadow of the Erdtree as well as Elden Ring.
During an interview at IGN Fan Fest 2025, George R. R. Martin was asked about the possibility of Elden Ring being adapted to the silver screen, to which the author asserted his interest in the matter and hinted at the present status of such a project. Martin stated that he is unable to say “too much about it,” but revealed that “there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.” Having contributed his creative mind to the original story of Elden Ring, many fans are hopeful of the author making a return for an Elden Ring movie, but Martin made it clear that there is one major roadblock potentially stalling his involvement in the project. George R. R. Martin’s next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series is already 13 years delayed from its original intended release date, and Martin wants to focus on that story before moving on to a screenplay for Elden Ring.
Does FromSoftware Want to Make an Elden Ring Movie?
In addition to George R. R. Martin’s preoccupation with his next major novel, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki further explained the hurdles that would need to be overcome before an Elden Ring movie adaptation can get off the ground. Miyazaki said that, while he is also very interested in an adaptation, neither he nor FromSoftware are experienced enough with other mediums beyond gaming. As such, they would need to find a “very strong partner” to build trust with and work in tandem on bringing the story of Elden Ring to cinemas.
While George R. R. Martin may not be available to work on an Elden Ring film adaptation anytime soon, fans have reason to remain optimistic. The upcoming Elden Ring: Nightreign DLC was completed without any involvement from Martin, meaning it is possible for the Elden Ring universe to expand without the author’s input. Furthermore, major production studios like Sony and Netflix have already announced a slew of upcoming video game adaptations, suggesting that the timing could be ripe for Miyazaki and FromSoftware to find that crucial partner for an Elden Ring film.
