In the modern story of One Piece, almost more than anything else, Haki seems to be the predominant form of power. As of now, every major clash between powerful characters seems to involve Haki in some way, oftentimes overshadowing other important systems in the series, like Devil Fruits. Being the manifestation of willpower, and a way to prove a character’s massive levels of strength, it makes sense as to why Oda chose this power to be so important in One Piece’s end game.

However, although Haki has many versatile uses between its three forms – Observation, Armament, and Conqueror’s – there are many things in One Piece that Haki can’t do. With so many tricks and pieces of technology hidden on One Piece’s Thousand Sunny, it feels like if the ship was used more in every arc everything would be much easier, especially with the ship’s unprecedented mobility. However, it seems that the ship, due to its overwhelming usefulness, is often written out of arcs, whether it be from being beached on shore, or out of fuel.

In the end, while these powers would make each arc easier overall, it makes sense why they have taken a backseat in the story of One Piece. Overall, these powers could make many aspects of the One Piece journey, like strong fights and daring escapes, obsolete. Without these powers, One Piece has more tension, and in turn, a better story.
