Summary

  • The Black Panther game by Cliffhanger Games is rumored to feature authentic African martial arts and a branching narrative.
  • Players can choose the next Black Panther with character-specific weapons, armor, and unique story outcomes, according to leaks.
  • EA plans to release three Marvel-based games, including Iron Man by Motive Studio, in addition to the Black Panther game.

The forthcoming Black Panther game, developed by the new EA-owned studio Cliffhanger Games, will reportedly aim to “replicate” African martial arts and feature a branching narrative, character-specific weapons, and other core gameplay aspects. First announced in 2023, the new Black Panther game is the debut project for Cliffhanger Games, a US-based developer helmed by a former Monolith Productions lead, Kevin Stephens.

After the massive success of Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles in recent years, more single-player experiences centered on Marvel superheroes have popped up in the pipeline of major industry players. Besides the Sony-owned developer’s Wolverine game, Plaion’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is another such game. Over at EA, one of the Marvel-related projects currently in the works is Cliffhanger’s Black Panther game, for which official details have been sparse so far, except that it will be a third-person action-adventure title with an original story. Thanks to a new batch of rumors, a variety of potential details about EA’s much-awaited release have surfaced lately.

Why EA’s Black Panther Taking Things Slow is a Best-Case Scenario

EA’s Black Panther might be in development for a long while yet, but the game taking things slow is actually the best-case scenario for it.

The new Black Panther game could be set to feature a mix of “authentic” African martial arts, superhuman strength, superhuman agility, and tech, according to Twitter user Hope, usually known for Call of Duty leaks. They also revealed that players would be able to choose the next Black Panther, each of which would come with a unique set of weapons, gadgets, and armor. Among the characters rumored to appear in Cliffhanger’s debut title are T’Challa, Killmonger, Shuri, M’Baku, and Azari. The report further states that the Black Panther game would have an over-the-shoulder view and would let the player roam a diverse map, which includes cities and savannahs, as they come across unique cultures and characters. Moreover, the story would reportedly be shaped by in-game actions and result in different outcomes across its “stories, missions, and dynamics.”

Black Panther Is One of Three Marvel-Based Games in Development at EA

In what could be defined as an exciting time for Marvel fans, multiple projects look set to bring original takes on popular superheroes from the comic publisher’s rich repository of characters. Interestingly, three of those games are planned to be rolled out by EA, following an agreement between Marvel and the American gaming giant. Along with the Black Panther-related game, an Iron Man game from the devs behind the Dead Space remake, Motive Studio, and a third unannounced title are expected to arrive in the future. Notably, the Motive-led project is also confirmed to be a third-person, single-player action-adventure title, similar to Cliffhanger’s game.

Given that there is still a limited amount of information about the Black Panther game, it may be fair to assume the project is still a significant time away from launch. Fortunately, in the meantime, fans of the Wakandan King can look forward to seeing him in the Skydance New Media-developed game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which is scheduled to hit the shelves later in 2025.
