Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 18, “Awakening”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Dragon Ball DAIMA began with Shenron being summoned with the Earth’s Dragon Balls to shrink Goku and his friends down to the size of children, and the arrival of Glorio kicked off the hunt for the Demon Realm Dragon Balls. Goku and Vegeta toppled Tamagami along the way to earn two of the Demon Realm Dragon Balls, but a plot by Dr. Arinsu slowly boiled in the background. With the finale just a few episodes away, Demon Realm Porunga has finally been summoned in Dragon Ball DAIMA.

Despite warnings that the powerful Tamagami which protect the Demon Realm Dragon Balls had never been defeated, even miniaturized Goku is still Goku. The pint-sized Super Saiyan made relatively quick work of Tamagami Number Three, and the eventual arrival of Vegeta saw the Saiyan Prince tap into Super Saiyan 3 for the first time as he defeated Tamagami Number Two. Glorio has been by their side through it all, but Dr. Arinsu finally triggered her double agent to summon Demon Realm Porunga in Dragon Ball DAIMA.

Dr. Arinsu Activates Secret Agent Glorio

Dragon Ball DAIMA has taken many twists and turns since Goku first set out for the Demon Realm alongside Glorio and Shin. At first, the Supreme Kai was suspicious of their new ally. Glorio’s lack of surprise that they’d been turned into children was the first sign, and his claim that King Kadan of the Third Demon World sent him later turned out to be a lie. A few episodes into Dragon Ball DAIMA, fans learned why those suspicions had not been unfounded. As they gathered the first two Demon Realm Dragon Balls, Dr. Arinsu created a pair of spiritual successors to Majin Buu and secured a Demon Realm Dragon Ball of her own.

When even Goku’s iconic Super Saiyan 4 transformation couldn’t stop the power of Supreme Demon King Gomah and the Tertian Oculus, Dr. Arinsu finally set her plan into motion. Heading into Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 18, “Awakening”, it seemed like the only way to actually summon the Demon Realm’s own eternal dragon would be with the help of Neva. Only the legendary Namek can speak Namekian, or so everyone thought. Arinsu ordered Glorio to retrieve the other two Demon Realm Dragon Balls, and Hybis innocently handed them off to Glorio without a second thought. The final step would’ve needed Neva, but Arinsu had Glorio secretly learn Namekian as preparation for that very moment.

When even Goku’s iconic Super Saiyan 4 transformation couldn’t stop the power of Supreme Demon King Gomah and the Tertian Oculus, Dr. Arinsu finally set her plan into motion.

The True Power of Neva, The Legendary Namek

The Password is Porunga Once Again

Arinsu plans to use her wish to become the new Supreme Demon King, one even stronger than Gomah, and reign with such terror that those elsewhere in the universe bow to the power of the Demon Realm. Glorio’s thoughts flashed back to his journey alongside Goku, Shin, Panzy, and the others. After a moment of hesitation, Glorio uttered the words longtime fans first heard spoken by Dende during the Frieza Saga in Dragon Ball Z. “Takkarapto… Popporunga… Pupiritparo.”

From his muscular build to his distinctive horns, the newly summoned Demon Realm Porunga is almost identical to the one first seen on Namek, but this eternal dragon is red and significantly larger than the Porunga summoned by the Namekian Dragon Balls.

The reveal of Demon Realm Porunga further reinforces Neva’s connection to everything the Namekians went on to become. Piccolo asks Neva if he is “the Legendary Namek” when they first meet, and it’s later revealed Neva is the lone Namekian that chose to stay behind in the Demon Realm. The Demon Realm Dragon Balls were created as a way to reward the Namekians, but villains found out and Neva created the Tamagamis to protect the orbs. For thousands of years, Neva has remained in the Demon Realm even after the other Namekians fled to the outside world.

Neva wasn’t even sure other Nameks were still alive when Dragon Ball DAIMA began, and fans have now seen that Neva’s own eternal dragon was the blueprint for the Porunga of Namek. Demon Realm Porunga’s sheer power was evident when he effortlessly knocked away an attack by Gomah, likely making him the second-strongest canon eternal dragon after Super Shenron. Like the series has done so many times before, the summoning of Demon Realm Porunga continues to illuminate the origins of everything that comes before and after Dragon Ball DAIMA.
