Despite being released back in 2011, Portal 2 still has an amazingly dedicated community. Thanks in part to the strong modding support that Valve has made a consistent feature across its releases, Portal 2 is still seeing community maps and mods developed to this day. Most of the mods and user-generated content for Portal 2 can be found directly via the Steam workshop.

One of the most popular methods of sharing user-generated content for Portal 2 has been via community maps. Portal 2‘s mapmaker tool is easy enough to use that even players with no modding experience can build a custom map out of the available pre-built assets and achieve some impressive results. Some users even take it one step further and add their own custom assets and stories. A lot of maps are designed for a single-player experience, but there are also plenty of co-operative maps that are best played with a partner. Gelocity 1-3

Need For Speed

Take the puzzling out of Portal 2 and simply race against friends with the Gelocity community maps. These clever maps make use of Portal 2‘s velocity gel to create racetrack-style maps for players to compete on. Players can even use the portal gun to get an advantage or confuse their opponents. There are three maps in the Gelocity series, as well as some time trial maps that single-player fans can enjoy.

Tricky Triple

Triple Threat

Tricky Triple is a one-off co-op map with three testing chambers that will provide a solid challenge for players. It’s the highest-rated one-off co-op map on the workshop for a reason, with players reporting an hour or more of play time as they work together on the puzzle solutions. There are a couple of surprises to find there too, but no spoilers here.

This is Teamwork 1-7

Team Building

This is Teamwork is a seven-map series designed with co-op in mind. The interesting thing about the Teamwork maps is that they usually focus on one or two core puzzle elements, and really make players use them creatively. They often don’t have players using portals, and focus on other mechanics instead. The maps sit mostly at the medium level of difficulty, offering a moderate level of challenge without ever getting too frustrating to solve.

Hakuna Matata 1-6

No Worries

DrFauli is a prolific Portal 2 map creator, and Hakuna Matata is another one of their map series, featuring 6 challenging co-op maps. Despite the laid-back name, Hakuna Matata is a more difficult series to complete than This is Teamwork overall. The difficulty is focused on working out puzzle solutions rather than reflexes or timing though, which will please co-op players looking for a more cerebral challenge.

The Order Of Things 1-14

Everything In Its Place

The Order of Things is a massive co-op map series with 14 separate maps. All the maps are highly rated individually, but playing them through with a co-op partner as a series rivals Portal 2‘s own co-op map experience. These maps can be difficult to solve, especially as later maps in the series start to get more complex, but veteran Portal 2 co-op players will enjoy the process of solving them.

Chicken Test 1-3

Chicken Game

The Chicken Tests are a short co-op map series created way back in 2011, but still worth playing with a friend today. Unlike some of the more cerebral Portal 2 maps, the Chicken Test maps rely more on precision movement and reflexes, usually with a severe risk of death by turret. That might get frustrating for some players, but should satisfy those looking for a test of their Portal 2 movement skills.

Cubes of Destiny

The Cubes of Destiny map is one for players who want to test their co-operative puzzle-solving skills. This one-off map relies heavily on co-operation and dual-portal teamwork. Cubes of Destiny isn’t a long map, so if players know the solution, it’s super quick. Figuring out that solution is sure to take even experienced Portal 2 co-op partners a while, though.

Buttons, Elevators And Goo

Exactly What You’d Expect

This is another one-off co-op map from creator Donyel. Buttons, Elevators and Goo might not have the most creative name, but at least players know exactly what to expect going in. The solution revolves around the aforementioned features, but players will once again need to use their co-op portal operation skills to actually work out how those features fit together.

Aperture Valentine

Aperture Valentine is a huge, highly creative co-op map made by several map creators as a collaborative effort. The map even includes a custom story of sorts, and sees players trying to prove to GladOs that their robotic workplace love affair is valid and real. That’s achieved via some creative co-op puzzle solving, which stays in the mid-range of Portal 2 puzzle difficulty. For experienced players looking for more of a challenge, there is also an advanced difficulty version of the map known as Aperture Valentine – The Advanced Chambers.

Electrophobia 1-3

Co-op Plus Story

The Electrophobia maps are some of the few co-op maps that try to tell a story along with their co-op gameplay. The premise of Electrophobia’s story is simple: Fizzlers are the bane of a robot’s existence. Any long-time Portal 2 players will be able to relate. The co-op gameplay in the maps is inventive and relies on creative problem-solving rather than timing. The Electrophobia maps are well put together, and the only real downside is that the collection isn’t longer.
