Avowed Was Rebooted Twice During Development

Avowed’s Combat Doesn’t Make Any Sense

Summary

  • The Avowed we know now wasn’t the Avowed that was being worked on several years ago.
  • Rather, it was being pitched as a multiplayer title, combining elements of Destiny and Skyrim.
  • Via reboots and restructuring, the game honed in on established lore, as well as “open zones” instead of an open world.

As more and more gamers begin their journeys in Avowed, discoveries are being made across the board. For one, you can’t kill chickens. Two, if you cast an ice shield on yourself, then you can walk on water. And three, there’s a reference to Garrus from Mass Effect tucked inside.

That said, had Avowed maintained its original premise, it’s highly likely that those discoveries wouldn’t exist. That’s because the Avowed we now know is not the Avowed that once existed. Rather, it was designed to be something else entirely. That is before reboots and new directions came around.

Multiplayer Skyrim Just Isn’t Obsidian

In an extensive report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, it was revealed that, at two different points, Avowed was rebooted, the last of which reportedly took place in 2021.

Per the report, development on the game began in 2018, which Obsidian was pitching as a cross between Destiny and Skyrim, a game that would allow players to explore together in a fantastical world. After Microsoft’s acquisition and under Carrie Patel’s leadership, the game took a different turn, instead honing in on what Obsidian did best.

First, the game would focus on the lore established by Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity franchise. Secondly, the game would replace ambitions for an open world with “Open Zones,” a decision that the developers recently called a “good pacing mechanism.”

Eventually, the game was re-revealed and finally released after a brief delay. And based off the article, it sounds like the world of Avowed and the very foundation it stands on isn’t going away anytime soon. “Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it,” Patel said. In other words, while Destiny meets Skyrim wasn’t meant to be, Avowed is looking to stay.
