It’s pretty rare these days that creepypastas find any kind of success – they were popular in the earlier, more mysterious days of the internet. But one of the few that’s really taken off in recent years is The Backrooms. Originally emerging back in 2022, between short stories, videos, and memes, The Backrooms tells the tale of a strange middle dimension, outside the borders of reality. The Backrooms 1998 is part of that universe. Almost three years after it entered early access, the game’s full 1.0 release is finally here – and for a limited time, you can get it at a pretty nice discount, too.

For those that haven’t heard about the creepypasta before, here’s the rundown: it’s essentially a story about this strange occurrence where you noclip out of reality, i.e. ending up out of bounds, but in the real world. This area, the backrooms themselves, are just an endless series of rooms with old carpeted flooring, and lightly stylized yellow wallpaper. The Backrooms 1998 is essentially a first-person, found footage take on that, where you play as a young teen who has to try and find their way out, all the while avoiding a monster stalking the liminal space. You know, the usual modern indie horror game kind of thing.

The game is on sale right now too at 25% off, so where it’ll normally set you back $10 / £7.20, you can currently pick it up for $8 / £5.40. Hard to complain about at that price, and if you head over to the game’s Steam page, you’ll see that it’s available as part of a few reasonably priced bundles too, if they take your fancy.
