Star Wars has never been a romance-centric series. Given all the pew pew and vwoom vwoom going on, it’s understandable that most characters won’t have much time to really settle down and find that special someone or someones.

But there are still plenty of good and even great romantic relationships throughout the Star Wars series, from the movies to the shows and even the games. But just know that Anakin and Padme do not count for either. It might be a hot take, but there’s genuine toxicity at the heart of their story, and it’s honestly difficult to romanticize what they have.

Many people have some understandable gripes with Solo: A Star Wars Story. But it honestly gets a bad rap, and one of many aspects that deserve more love is the not-quite-perfect relationship between Han’s makeshift mentor Beckett and his lover/partner in literal crime Val.
Beckett and Val have the thieving game down to a science together, and as a bonus, they seem to mostly steal from the Empire. But whether they’re on a job or laying low, their genuine affection for each other never fades, which makes Val’s tragic end all the more heartbreaking.

Tragedy is unfortunately the name of the game in many cases when you’re trying to find happiness in a galaxy constantly ravaged by wars of the star variety. A romance doomed from the start, the tale of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Duchess Satine Kryze is one that fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will never forget.
Obi-Wan and Satine are a classic epic romantic couple: a noble knight in a forbidden relationship with royalty. They shared mutual respect and relished the rare opportunities they had to see each other. Satine unfortunately met an untimely end at the hands of Maul, finally openly proclaiming her love for her Jedi paramour as she lay dying in his arms.

But he’d encountered the rebel operative Jan Ors on numerous missions, experiencing a strange connection to her that stayed his blaster hand.
Over time, they grew close, with Kyle eventually defecting to the rebels and, later, the New Republic and New Jedi Order. But their best times were always when the two of them would work as mercenaries for the New Republic, and it was during that time when Kyle not only came into his Jedi abilities, but the two of them finally admitted their feelings for one another.

Cal Kestis And Merrin
A Jedi and a Nightsister of Dathomir. Two of the last of their kind. It’s poetic that Cal Kestis and Merrin would not only find each other as they both struggled to survive, but also thrive together. You can debate their merit as a couple, but they both at least deserve happiness after what they went through by the time Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order came around.

Owen And Beru Lars
It’s hard to find a couple more defined by tragedy than Owen and Beru Lars. They’re associated more with their violent deaths at the hands of Imperial stormtroopers than anything they did in their actual lives, but if you take a look, you’ll see they lived well, possibly more so than most in the Star Wars universe.
Living a simple life on a moisture farm on Tatooine, Owen and Beru got more than they bargained for when Obi-Wan Kenobi asked them to raise young Luke Skywalker as their own. But their love for each other extended to the child, to the point where they even fought off an Imperial Inquisitor to keep him safe. They remained loving and protective guardians to him until their deaths, and you know they went down swinging, together.

Han Solo And Leia Organa
Look, there’s a lot to criticize about the relationship between Han and Leia. They’re antagonistic toward each other, and Han flat out disregards the many times Leia clearly says no to his advances. It’s a genuine mess, especially when their romance first begins to develop in The Empire Strikes Back.
But there’s no denying that they’re also the most well-known couple in Star Wars history. Subsequent stories both in canon and out have done some great work in fleshing them out as more mutually respectful than how they started out, which is appreciated. They may not have lasted, but their whirlwind romance is legendary, and you can tell there’s still affection there when they meet again all those years later.

Bail And Breha Organa
While Luke’s adoptive parents (or aunt and uncle) displayed one example of protecting their charge, Bail and Breha Organa exhibited a much more extravagant version of the idea. Living as the respective senator and queen of Alderaan, the two wanted nothing more than a good life for their people and, most importantly, their adoptive daughter Leia.
They served their planet as equals, just like they handled their relationship. Their love for each other was apparent not only in how they raised Leia, but how they presented themselves in public as they tried to oppose the Empire as carefully as they could. Unfortunately, like Owen and Beru, they did not survive the Empire coming for them (few would survive the Death Star’s power). The moral of this story is: don’t adopt a Skywalker.

Hera Syndulla And Kanan Jarrus

If you want to see a relationship built on mutual respect, look no further than Hera and Kanan. As a born leader/ace pilot and Jedi-in-hiding, Hera and Kanan would clash in their opinions from time to time. But the respect they held for each other was unmatched. These two freedom fighters were brought together via a mutual hatred of fascism and frankly, there’s nothing more beautiful than that.
They essentially served as surrogate parents to their fellow rebel members of the Ghost crew, and yes, that includes the ones older than them, especially Zeb. Kanan’s heroic and heartbreaking death hit Hera hard, as it did for everyone. But they were truly meant for each other, and his memory lives on in their friends and their son, Jacen.

Finn And Poe Dameron
What’s that look for? Who cares if they aren’t canon? Neither are Mara and Luke, and everyone still loves them. Finn and Poe showed more chemistry together than almost anyone in the Star Wars sequels and probably most people in the rest of Star Wars.
They shared a bond from the moment Finn helped Poe escape the First Order (which was really to help himself escape), and they quickly grew closer from there. You can see how happy they are to see each other when they reunite, and even the actors themselves have said that there’s more than just platonic love there. Give Finn and Poe the happy ending they deserve, dangit.
