Dragon Ball Daima takes a lot of elements from the old and beloved series, Dragon Ball GT. Starting from turning Goku into a kid and having similar adventures, Daima tries to capture the same child-like feeling of joy that the original series had before the days of Z.

An unexpected addition to Daima was Goku transforming into Super Saiyan 4, a state that is arguably the most popular addition to the lore from Dragon Ball GT. What we are left to wonder is what this means, how Goku can achieve this state, and whether it is in any way similar to the old version.

What Is Super Saiyan 4?

Back in Dragon Ball Z, the different Super Saiyan forms were given numbers. The states of Super Saiyan 1 and 2 are rather similar, with the hair not even changing much depending on the character; it is in Super Saiyan 3 that the change is more noticeable, beyond the power output, that is.

The numbers were given during the Buu Saga, with Gohan being known as the first one to achieve Super Saiyan 2 retroactively.

Super Saiyan 3 not only has hair and eye color changes, but it also makes the hair grow significantly, and there is a notable lack of eyebrows. This was known as the most dramatic transformation a Saiyan could go through until Super Saiyan 4 was introduced.

In Dragon Ball GT, Goku had to first have his tail grow back to achieve the next level. Then, he needed to transform into a giant ape while being Super Saiyan, and once in that form, recover his self-awareness; such an event triggers the Super Saiyan 4 transformation.

Once unlocked, the Super Saiyan 4 state can be accessed without becoming a giant ape.

The Super Saiyan 4 state has fur covering the entire body of the Saiyan except for parts of the chest, hands, and face. The color of the fur and hair is a darker tone, often more similar to the natural hair of the Saiyan, rather than the golden glow often associated with the different transformations.

The strangest part, however, is the clothing. In Dragon Ball GT, both Goku and Vegeta achieve this state, with their clothes changing significantly when they do so; these alterations are reminiscent of the Fusion technique rather than a regular Super Saiyan transformation.

During his fight against Demon King Gomah, Goku uses the full might of Super Saiyan 3 to face this terrifying foe. However, such a state isn’t enough, and Gomah ends up defeating Goku and preparing a final attack to obliterate him and all his allies.

This is when Neva, the mysterious elder Namekian, approaches Goku and does something to him. This triggers a transformation on the Saiyan, becoming the previously mentioned Super Saiyan 4 without the need to turn into a giant ape, and even growing a tail in the process.

While the Goku in GT becomes an adult when transforming into Super Saiyan 4, the one in Daima remains a child.

What seems to have happened is that Neva unlocked Goku’s latent potential, an ability seen before several times in the series. Neva is able to do this for his Tamagami at a distance, and it seems that he did the same for the Saiyan, pushing his power beyond any known limits.
