Blastoise

Here we can see the lone Blastoise, lounging in a downstairs or basement-level garage or workshop of some sort with tools and even an old engine. Why Blastoise is there isn’t clear. Do their canons need some sprucing up? Or maybe this is where they stay when their trainer is home?
No matter what message the scene is trying to convey, it’s at least a calm moment away from battle and a sneak peek into the more average part of everyday Pokemon life, which is nice to see when the video games often focus on only the journey to becoming champion and not the cozy side of life.
While some of the promo cards are presented in the same fashion as the rare one-star cards, they do not have a rarity since they can’t be obtained through normal packs.

Cinccino

Cinccino is a beautiful Pokemon, even if it may not be the most competitively viable Pokemon, especially when up against the heavy-hitting ex cards. But when it comes to card collecting and card art, move over, this fluffy scarf Pokemon is always going to make some waves.

Piles of flowers surround them while the wind flows through their hair. Cinccino holds one single, pink flower in their hands. There are even some soft, circular lighting effects throughout the artwork. It makes for a very relaxing card that, honestly, can hit pretty heavily if you have a team of Pokemon on your bench.

Squirtle

This may be one of the few times we see Squirtle winning out over their final evolution stage Blastoise. But this card is too cute to be in the shadow of that dusty workshop. A very happy Squirtle remains afloat in a large body of water, almost looking like they have been practicing cannonballs thanks to the surrounding splashes.
You can see a distant shore with very stylized palm trees that match the cutesy simplicity of Squirtle and how they were drawn for this piece. While it doesn’t have the fine details of the promotional Blastoise card, it’s not needed due to that very choice to make everything more cartoony.

Cresselia ex
Promo-A, Card #37
Cresselia isn’t the only ex card that is locked away behind a promotional event. The same thing happened with Lapras and Moltres. They have all been the stars of Solo battle events, where you can win a promotional pack as a chance reward for beating an increasingly strong AI opponent.

You’ll be very lucky to pull any of these cards.
While all the cards have been stunning in their own right, the Cresselia ex card just works so well for this Pokemon thanks to the celestial elements and lighting effects. If you have this card in your collection, viewing it in the My Cards section lets you move the card around and is the best way to take in all of those sparks of light.

Venusaur
Promo-A, Card #18
Venusaur didn’t get the cutest designs when it came to the binder covers and playmats during their event. But this promo card starts to make up for that. We see the seed Pokemon sleeping outside of their trainer’s home, on a wooden pad made just for them.
Unlike the Blastoise card which shows the Pokemon sitting in this cluttered space, Venusaur instead has that big, open expanse so that they can be close but not confined. And the detail of the wooden chair left out next to them like their trainer comes out and sits beside them, is such a cute touch that just makes the imagined story all the better.

Mewtwo
Promo-A, Card #10
This Mewtwo card is one of a handful that is locked behind the Premium Pass that players can subscribe to. No matter your feelings about certain cards being locked behind a paywall, that doesn’t take away from how well this card is made and illustrated.

Pikachu

Of course, Pikachu has gotten some special promotional cards. Would this be a Pokemon game otherwise? Similar to the Mewtwo promo, this Pikachu was also locked behind that Premium Pass. It is a shame as this one is beautifully done and does show Pikachu as the traveling Pokemon companion, hoping to climb to the rank of champion with you.
Pikachu is sitting in a suitcase, looking as though they just threw your items on the ground as a way to tell you to hurry up and get ready. The sun is up, so you should be catching and cataloging Pokemon already! Whether you want to collect them all or not, this is a great card that finds a delightful way to pay tribute to the history of Pokemon, especially the stories in the anime and the video games.

Pokedex

Is it shocking to see an Item card beat out some of the biggest names in all of Pokemon? Probably less so when you see the artwork. While the focus of the illustration is the Pokedex itself, the all-important tool that all trainers should have, what makes this card is the addition of the Pokemon around it.

These cards are useful tools.
Gathered around a burst of light just behind the Pokedex are Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander, the Kanto starters and stars. All the Pokemon look excited and happy, so when you see this card hit the field, even if it’s not ideal for your battle, it is fun to see it flash across your screen.

Piplup

Piplup is having a picnic with Turtwig and Chimchar. Does anything more need to be said about this card? While that may explain why this is one of the best illustrated Pokemon Pocket promo cards, it’s not just that this whimsical scene is bursting with cuteness and light-hearted fun.
There are nods to the video game as it looks like those delicious poffins players of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl spent hours making. Even the bag they are placed in matches the bag you carry around with you as a trainer. And is anyone else a little worried about Drifloon playing with Chimchar?

Pikachu

Yes, Pikachu managed to make the list twice. But similar to the Pokedex card, it’s because of the combined efforts of more than just the Pokemon mascot. Pikachu is joined by Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and Eevee who all have played important parts in the success of Pokemon.
The rainbows in the background of the design have a flow to them, and while the card looks metallic when you view it in your collection, the rainbows and illustrated light effects make it that much more stunning when you are shifting it back and forth with your fingertips.
