The voice acting world is a versatile place, with countless artists taking on tons of unique and varied roles. Men, women, robots, beings of pure energy, whatever Turgle is in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, every unique character needs a voice. So why leave those roles to just men and women?

Men have played women since Shakespearean times and vice versa, though you don’t see much of it in more recent decades. But don’t forget about nonbinary voice actors. These folks take on roles every day that go against their own gender identities, and that’s a skill worth celebrating.

Brittany Lauda

Active in the professional voice acting world since 2013 (and beyond in their amateur days), Brittany Lauda has cultivated a respectable career in the space. If you’re an anime fan, you’ve most certainly heard them at some point, but she’s also got some notable video game roles.

Specializing in confident, upper-class types of voices, Lauda brings the sass with characters like the self-assured Chiori in Genshin Impact and Alma in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. But his range beyond that is certainly impressive, as seen with young Ashley in Ys 10: Nordics.

Kelsey Jaffer

While you may have heard Kelsey Jaffer in a commercial here and there, their real talent lies in character voices. This especially applies to video games with an anime vibe, and they’ve certainly got the energy for it.

Jaffer boasts a pretty incredible vocal range, bringing the intimidating Jane Doe to life in Zenless Zone Zero as flawlessly as they do with the adorable little Yaoyao in Genshin Impact. That’s only the tip of their talent, and there’s plenty more where it came from.

Kayli Mills

Kayli Mills has been a fixture in the video game voice acting realm since 2016, and her extensive resume just gets more impressive with each passing year. Her medium range comes in handy for everything from the softspoken to the kind of person you’d hate to see in a dark alley.

Mills had already established herself when she took on the role of former Turk Cissnei in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the remake of Crisis Core. But arguably her coolest part is that of Misako in the River City Girls games, proving her talents at the always enjoyable butt-kicking types.

Casey Mongillo

Casey Mongillo is a real powerhouse in the voice acting field, and not just in her number of roles. He’s perhaps best known as the new voice of Shinji Ikari in the Netflix dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Half-foot Chilchuck in Delicious in Dungeon, but there’s so much more.

They’ve voiced characters of all genders and done each flawlessly. In terms of video games, you can see that skill in action as the Protagonist in Shin Megami Tensei 5, Paradiso receptionist Keavy Andreas in Starfield, and the well-mannered Ezer in Ys 10: Nordics.

Christina Assaf-Costello

With a knack for voicing femme characters of all age groups, Christina Assaf-Costello is well-suited for any situation. Enthusiasm is the name of the game here, and they have it in spades.

Among many other roles, Costello brings the cuteness as the newbie forest ranger Collei in Genshin Impact. But she still masterfully maintains that energy as the eager Mars miner Sivan in Starfield.

Austin Lee Matthews

One tragedy of being a voice actor is that, even with a super stacked resume, you still might not get the recognition you deserve. Given the fan-favorite roles Austin Lee Matthews has taken on, it’s a crime they aren’t more well-known, because those roles demonstrate his impeccable range.

Governor Ivenci in Dragon Age: The Veilguard was a surprise to many, thanks to them, as was duty-bound student Hidetoshi Odagiri in Persona 3 Reload. But Matthews specifically deserves serious praise for making the charismatic Soldier Roche in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth such a joy to watch.

Emi Lo

There’s a good chance you’ve already heard Emi Lo somewhere, and an even better chance that you enjoyed their performance as Lucy in the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. But while they could easily brag about their anime resume stretching back to 2019, she’s no slouch in video games either.

You can hear Lo’s quiet intensity as Ruan Mei in Honkai: Star Rail. But his penchant for more timid roles is on full display as Evelyn in the mobile game Pokemon Masters.

Marin Miller

Marin Miller possesses a subtly remarkable talent, managing to completely set apart their roles even if they lie in the same vocal range. Making their mark in the anime world since all the way back in 2005, they quickly began branching out, and video games are all the better for it.

Some great examples include Miller’s elegant portrayal of Athena in both Hades games as well as their truly ethereal performance as the Caretaker in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Hey, spirits don’t have genders, so you might as well voice them with that in mind.

Marissa Lenti

It’s true; there’s a real anime-to-video-games pipeline, and Marissa Lenti has traversed it. She’s a pro at anime series, working on shows like One Piece all the way to Attack on Titan, so you know she has the chops.

This is proven further with their work as the no-nonsense mech pilot Moze in Borderlands 3 (and arguably the best player character, please don’t fight). She also does a fantastic job as Sophia in Cris Tales, using that same vocal range but making it sound effortlessly more regal.

Anjali Kunapaneni

Active since 2014, Anjali Kunapaneni has had a solid run of voice over roles going the whole time. While they’ve had parts in anime series like Pokemon Horizons, video games are where the real meat of their resume resides.

Kunapaneni excels at young, energetic voices, as seen in their performances as Dori in Genshin Impact and Lian in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. But a little vocal shift, and they’re almost unrecognizable as the much more intense Nisha in Fortnite and the easily flustered nonbinary student Sawyer in Boyfriend Dungeon.

Kimlinh Tran

Coming into their own from the wild west of online voice acting communities, Kimlinh Tran has held a comfortable place in the voice acting world since the mid-2000s. With plenty of anime and cartoon credits to her name, like the Blacksmith in volume 9 of RWBY, video games are naturally a great fit for them.

Over the years, you can hear Kimlinh as the super high-energy Fidget from Dust: An Elysian Tail, the catty (and often dismembered) Ms Fortune and Robo Fortune in Skullgirls, Agent Mara Forest in Crow Country, and the sugary sweet Kumiho Cookie in Cookie Run: Kingdom.

Erika Ishii

Talk about an up-and-coming icon. Erika Ishii has been bringing the noise in the voice acting world for some time now after already making a name for himself on various Dropout programs. But recently, her popularity has skyrocketed, and for good reason.

You can hear Erika in Dragon Age: The Veilguard as the “American” femme voice for the player character Rook. But you also might remember them as TV host Ruth Dzeng in Cyberpunk 2077. That’s not to mention his lead role as Atsu in the Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yotei. They’re definitely going places.
