  • The Belt of Stone Giant Strength is a helpful magical item for blood hunters as it raises the wearer’s strength and combines well with certain subclass abilities.
  • The Cloak of Displacement is a useful defensive item for blood hunters as it creates an illusion of the wearer and forces attackers to roll at a disadvantage.

Dungeons & Dragons: All Blood Hunter Subclasses, Ranked

Blood Hunters are a severely underplayed class in Dungeons & Dragons, but well worth exploring.

The key to the power of the blood hunter is Hemocraft, the art of blood magic, and they are more casters than melee fighters, but that depends entirely on the build and subclass. Some of the magical items of the D&D universe that are ideal for blood hunters might also depend on finer details, but overall, these are some of the best magical items for your blood hunter.

Updated February 20, 2025, by Jack Filsinger: With the release of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, there are now more fantastic magic items than ever, especially for blood hunters. We’ve updated this list, adding some additional blood hunter magic items as well as tables to denote rarity and each item’s key feature.

Amulet Of Health

The golden amulet of health item in Dungeons & Dragons.

Rarity

Key Feature

Rare

Increased Constitution.

Because the bread and butter of the blood hunter is hemorrhaging their own hit points, finding any items that can increase your health will always be well worth it. The Amulet of Health is simple but effective at keeping blood hunters sturdy.

When you’re attuned to this item, your Constitution is 19. This is great for low-level blood hunters who might be struggling with a lower-than-average Constitution score. With this amulet, every time you level up and roll hit dice, you’ll be guaranteed a higher base health.

9

Dagger Of Venom The dagger of venom item in Dungeons & Dragons.

Rarity

Key Feature

Rare

Bonus to attack rolls.

One of the best things about blood hunters early on is their ability to access many different damage types thanks to their Crimson Rites. However, even at high levels, blood hunters do not have easy access to poison damage. That changes with the Dagger of Venom.

This item gives you a +1 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls, and you can use a bonus action to magically coat the blade with poison. Depending on how your DM feels, you can even potentially use one bonus action to activate a Crimson Rite, and then use your subsequent bonus action to coat this weapon with poison, meaning you’ll be doing extra poison and elemental damage on each attack.

Belt Of Stone Giant Strength

A duo of stone giants leering menacingly in Dungeons & Dragons.

Rarity

Key Feature

Very Rare

Increased Strength score.

It’s either Strength or Dexterity that determines the power of a blood hunter, and for those that need some extra strength, any of the belts in the ‘giant’ series would be helpful. The rarity of these items varies, but all of them are above common rarity.

The Belt of Stone Giant Strength raises the stat of the wearer to 23, which is also helpful to blood hunters who fight from melee range. Those who have taken the subclass order of the ghostslayer and have abilities like Rite of the Dawn can combine their increased weapon damage with radiant damage as well.

Periapt Of Wound Closure

The Periapt of Wound Closure from Dungeons & Dragons.

Rarity

Key Feature

Uncommon

Buffs to Death Saves.

Blood hunters are limited to light and medium armor, so anything that helps with defensive or healing abilities is a good choice. The Periapt of Wound Closure has two effects, and both of them help with wounds after the fact.

When a character has been wounded and rolls to restore hot points, this handy necklace doubles it. If affected by a DoT, with a spell or something like Rend, this pendant will keep you from dying at the beginning of your turn, as you can change failed Death Saves into successful ones.

6

Cloak Of Displacement

The cloak of displacement item in Dungeons & Dragons.

Rarity

Key Feature

Rare

Imposes disadvantage on attacks.

Plenty of casters use this handy cloak, which provides an important defensive power to any class that has to deal with a limited AC. Since blood hunters need to preserve their hit points for their abilities, avoiding as many attacks as possible is key.

Put it on, and it will project an illusion of yourself two feet away from your actual location, and any creature that attempts an attack will have to roll at a disadvantage. If you do take damage, however, the cloak’s effect will wear off, and it also doesn’t work if your speed is zero.

5

Blood Fury Tattoo

An orc creating a magical tattoo in Dungeons & Dragons.

Rarity

Key Feature

Legendary

Deal necrotic damage.

Magical tattoos are popular with several classes, but uniquely suited to blood hunters. This one is for those who use melee attacks. It gives the blood hunter extra damage, extra hit points, and the ability to counter-attack.

4

Headband Of Intellect

The headband of intellect item in Dungeons & Dragons.
Headband of Intellect by Conceptopolis

Rarity

Key Feature

Uncommon

Increased Intelligence.

Intellect is another important stat for blood hunters, and the Headband of Intellect can give your character a boost. You do need to attune to it, but the buff is really worth it.

The headband has the effect of raising the wearer’s Intelligence to 19, but it doesn’t have any effect if the stat is already this high. This is great for increasing a blood hunter’s Hemocraft save DC.

3

Blood Armor Of Chaos

A duo of armored fighters cleaving through enemies in Dungeons & Dragons.
Armorers by Brian Valeza

Rarity

Key Feature

Very Rare

Increased AC.

This is a homebrew item, but so is the blood hunter class, so if the DM allows one, they’ll probably allow the other. Blood Armor gives the wearer the same AC as if they were wearing plate, and gives you a +3 to your AC on top of that. As blood hunters are often melee combatants, this can prove invaluable in combat.

The catch is that this magical armor is Cursed. It’s fused to your skin and can only be removed with a Greater Restoration or Wish spell. Failure to remove it means the inability to rest properly, and your skin starts to rot.

2

Javelin Of Lightning

The javelin of lighting item in Dungeons & Dragons.
Javelin of Lightning via Wizards of the Coast

Rarity

Key Feature

Uncommon

Inflict lightning damage.

Any character or class that specializes in ranged damage should also seek out this powerful and handy weapon. It’s a decent javelin to start with, dealing the standard 1d6 damage of most other weapons in its class.

Manual Of Quickness Of Action

The manual of quickness of action item in Dungeons & Dragons.
Manual of Quickness of Action via Wizards of the Coast

Rarity

Key Feature

Very Rare

Increased Dexterity.

Another handy item for most casting classes, especially those that use Dexterity, and that means blood hunters. After studying this tome for 48 hours, your character’s Dexterity score will increase by 2. Once it is used, it loses its magical properties for the next hundred years.

Unlike some other magical items that increase a character’s stats only to a certain level and don’t stack with other abilities, this one will also raise the maximum stat. Even if your blood hunter’s Dexterity is maxed out, the stat will be two points higher. As Dexterity is one of your key saving throws, this can prove extremely useful.
