As the second game in an emerging series, Pokemon Legends: Z-A will naturally be borrowing elements from its predecessor, Legends: Arceus. One thing that made Legends: Arceus stand out was the inclusion of characters who were ancestors of recognizable faces in previous games, an idea that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will hopefully continue.
Because it was set in the Pokemon world’s distant past, Pokemon Legends: Arceus presented developers with an opportunity to surprise players with its characters. Most of the major faces in the game were strikingly familiar to Pokemon fans, an obvious implication that these new characters from the past were intended to be distant relatives to standout characters in the present. Important figures like Professor Laventon, Commander Kamado, and Cogita, who are believed to be related to the Gallar rival, Hop, Sinnoh’s Professor Rowan, and Champion Cynthia respectively, helped players draw a direct line from the new games to the ones they were already familiar with. This idea was such a success that players want more ancestor characters to appear in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but choosing which characters to include might be important to the game’s success.

Which Character’s Might Have Ancestors in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Gym Leader Clemont is an Important Inclusion in Kalos
Because the majority of the Hisuian ancestors were related to characters from the Sinnoh games that the region is based on, it’s reasonable to expect that Legends: Z-A’s ancestor characters might come mostly from the Kalos games. Kalos is a stunning region with plenty of standout characters, as well as history and landmarks that might return in Legends: Z-A. Relatives of the region’s gym leaders, champion, and even enemies would all delight longtime fans, but by far the most recognizable Kalos gym leader is Clemont.
Acting as the leader of the Lumiose city gym, it’s a no-brainer that a game based in Lumiose City should include some link to Clemont. He also became a fan favorite because of his heavy inclusion in the Pokemon anime. Traveling with Ash through the Kalos region provided plenty of excellent character moments from Clemont, as well as his sister, Bonnie, who already provides familial ties for him. Because of this, he is the character most likely to strike a chord with fans of both the game and the anime, and should receive extra characterization through a look at his family’s past.
It’s Time for One Legends: Arceus Tease to Pay Off
In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, it was surprising to learn just how many characters had family history in the Hisui Region, especially the characters who are known from different modern-day regions. This extends to ancestors who didn’t directly appear in the game. Some areas of Legends: Arceus allowed the player to enter building of the Diamond and Pearl Clans, where scrolls depicting familiar faces could be seen. Though they never showed up in person, the ancestors of the Unova champion Alder, and Hohen villains Maxie and Archie could be seen hanging on the walls. These characters don’t have any link to Sinnoh or Kalos, but the inclusion of these ancestors from far-away locations has some players questioning their importance. Hopefully, they will appear in Pokemon Legends: Z-A to shed some light on the matter.
AZ Left Players with Unanswered Questions
Kalos was the perfect choice for a Legends game because one character’s mysterious past might finally come to light. Pokemon X and Y introduced players to AZ, a seemingly immortal giant who was once king of Kalos. This lore reveal was central to X and Y’s story, but AZ has barely been mentioned since, leaving some fans confused about his existence ever since. Returning to Kalos’ past would allow not AZ’s ancestor, but a younger version of AZ himself to appear. The player might also meet other members of the royal family, such as AZ’s envious brother. This would be a perfect way to expand on the incomplete story of X and Y within Legends: Z-A.
Many things about Pokemon Legends: Z-A are still unclear, including the game’s time period. There has been discussion about whether the game will take place in the past or future, which could mean the inclusion of descendant characters rather than ancestors. It is also believed that the game might take place only within Lumiose City, which would certainly change the number of important characters that the player might meet. Fans are hoping that questions about Legends: Z-A will be answered on Pokemon Day later this month.
