Summary

  • Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past, a 2D action RPG based on the classic anime series, will be released in 2026.
  • The original series featured comical English localization and was filled with jokes and pop culture references when it aired in the West in the 90s.

A new action RPG based on the cult-classic Samurai Pizza Cats anime has just been announced. For those too young to remember, Samurai Pizza Cats was an English localized version of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee (Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee) that was dubbed and produced by Saban Entertainment, the same company that would go on to make Power Rangers, the English dub of the first three Digimon anime seasons, and many other popular shows of the 90s and early 2000s.

Rather than be a straight translation of its Japanese source material, Samurai Pizza Cats famously took a more comical approach to its localization, filling the series with improv jokes and pop-culture references that quickly made it a cult favorite among 90s anime fans. The show takes place in Little Tokyo, a futuristic city that blends feudal Japanese culture with anthropomorphic cyborg animals. This city is constantly threatened by the Big Cheese and his army of ninja crows, who are always thwarted by the Samurai Pizza Cats – Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther, and Guido Anchovy.

While the titular trio did appear as playable characters in the arcade version of Jitsu Squad, there hasn’t been an official Samurai Pizza Cats video game in English, until now. Developer BLAST ZERO and publisher Red Dunes Games have announced Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past, a 2D action RPG that will reportedly launch sometime in 2026. This news was heralded by an animated trailer in which the Big Cheese fumes about not being a playable character before plotting to “bribe the animators” and destroy the Pizza Cats once and for all.

The Samurai Pizza Cats Are Getting a New Video Game

From there, the trailer switches over to the Samurai Pizza Cats springing into action. Gameplay footage soon follows, first showing 2D sidescrolling levels in which the Cats run through and slash enemies before switching over to a top-down overworld view similar to classic Zelda and Pokemon games. All three Pizza Cats are playable, with the player seemingly able to switch between Speedy, Polly, and Guido at will to unleash special abilities on their comical foes.

From what has been shown so far, Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past maintains the show’s classic art style with hand-drawn visuals and an overall humorous presentation. The original voice actors for both the English and Japanese versions are all returning aside from the Japanese voice of Sukashii/Guido, adding to the overall nostalgia the game is sure to bring fans who grew up on the old show. So far, there is no exact release date for Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past or a full list of systems on which it will be available, but it can now be wishlisted on Steam.
