Summary
- This indie developer has put together a working concept for a new Marvel Rivals hero — Doctor Octopus.
- He’s a Vanguard who can snap to any surface with his claw-handed metal arms, allowing him to scale buildings and get above his enemies.
- He also has a few abilities, and even an ultimate in which he grabs several opponents and repeatedly slams them into the ground.
When PSN went down earlier this month, indie developer WickedCube found a new distraction — Marvel Rivals modding. Spurred on by some “really cool Doc Ock fan art” (pictured below), they put together a prototype for what this iconic Spider-Man villain might look like if he was ever added to the game.
They envision Doc Ock as a Vanguard, ie Marvel Rivals’ answer to tanks. But given the four extra metal arms on his back, he’s much more versatile, able to scale walls with claws that snap to nearby surfaces.
What Are Doctor Octopus’ Abilities?
As reported by IGN, WickedCube also came up with a few abilities to round out Doc Ock’s design.
His base melee attack, Havoc Claw, strikes enemies with his two upper arms, while his ranged attack, Wrecking Grip, flings objects at opponents. He can also leap forward with Cephalopod Dash and block incoming projectiles with Tentacle Aegis, using all four of his mechanical arms.
They used Bruce Banner as a stand-in model for Otto Octavius.
WickedCube even conceptualised a unique ultimate ability called Wrath of the Master, in which Doctor Octopus grabs opponents with his four arms and repeatedly slams them into the ground.
As for why WickedCube chose Doctor Octopus from the enormous catalogue of Marvel characters, they told IGN, “Doc Ock has always been one of the coolest villains in Spider-Man, and his tentacles would be a challenge to implement. As far as I know, they haven’t been fully implemented with playable 3D movement in a game before. I thought, ‘Since I can’t play right now, why not make it myself?'”
It’s a little janky given that it’s a prototype, but it’s an incredible idea that feels right at home with the rest of the Marvel Rivals roster already.
