Excellent bullet time shooter El Paso, Elsewhere is getting a sequel

Max Payne is easily one of the most videogamey videogames of all time. It’s pulpy, it’s stylish, and there probably isn’t a better mechanic in any other shooter than its slow-motion bullet time. Well, maybe the time travel sequence from Titanfall 2, but that’s only for one section of the game. So when El Paso Elsewhere was announced way back in 2021, a supernatural, vampire-focused take on the Max Payne formula, I was immediately intrigued. The third-person shooter eventually released back in 2023, and quickly proved itself to be pretty popular, but I have to admit it left me wanting more. Luckily, it looks like my wish has been granted.

Yesterday, lead writer on the game Xalavier Nelson Jr. shared a post on BlueSky noting that it’s “early days, but… We’re doing something.” That something is a sequel to El Paso, Elsewhere it seems, though Nelson Jr. had very little else to say about the shooter apart from the fact it exists.

Still, lacking in details or otherwise, the prospect of a follow-up to one of the best PC games of 2023 is definitely an exciting one. Developer Strange Scaffold has been busy in the meantime too, releasing the, uh, horror fantasy kidnapping simulator Life Eater, the dark tally counting game Clickolding, and the much more regular FPS I Am Your Beast, all of which came out in 2024 alone.

A BlueSky post from @writnelson reading: "Early days, but... We're doing somthing." The post is accompanied by a screenshot of a script's title page reading: "El Paso, Elsewhere 2 Written by Xalavier Nelson Jr." A screenshot from El Paso Elsewhere of a man sitting in a red lit room can be seen in the background, the logo for PCGamesN in the top right corner of the image.

A sequel isn’t the only thing that’s in the works for El Paso, Elsewhere, as it was also reported last year that a film adaptation starring LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out) is in the works. Details are pretty slim on that one too, but it joins the increasingly long list of games getting film/ TV adaptations these days. Mostly it’s just nice to see an indie game get that kind of love, especially with a name like Stanfield’s attached.
