Riding on the popularity of Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning Dune movies, recent years have seen a resurgence of games based on Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi series. Both the 4X RTS Dune: Spice Wars and the digital adaptation of the classic Dune: Imperium board game allow players to lead the Great Houses of the Landsraad in epic wars of strategy and subterfuge for dominance over Arrakis. However, the upcoming shared open-world survival game Dune: Awakening will take a different approach, forcing gamers to survive the perils of the desert planet first-hand.

Norwegian developer Funcom, the team behind the popular MMO survival game Conan Exiles, has now scheduled a new Dune: Awakening reveal trailer on YouTube. As the supposed early 2025 release date approached without any updates from Funcom, many fans were beginning to worry that the game may be delayed. GameRant was recently invited to Oslo, Norway for a hands-on preview of Dune: Awakening. Arrakis will challenge gamers from the start, forcing them to survive the perilous sands as a prisoner stranded among the endless sand. Working alongside Herbert Estate to ensure that Dune: Awakening remains faithful to the spirit of the books, Funcom has promised that Arrakis will be as unique and deadly a setting as fans could expect. As such, water will be a valuable and essential resource, and careless players can perish as easily from the desert sun as from bandits’ knives, or the gaping maw of the Shai-Hulud sandworms. This latter option is to be especially feared, as death to one of the gargantuan creatures will cause the player to lose their current inventory with no hope of recovery.
Crafting will be essential to survival on Arrakis. Sillsuits and body shields will be essential to survive the game’s early stages, while later-game characters will eventually be able to craft complex bases and vehicles to quickly traverse the desert. As players explore Arrakis, they will also be able to upgrade a vast range of unique survival skills, from Bene Gesserit Voice training to superhuman Mentat computing powers. While players will have to wait a little longer to explore Arrakis in Dune: Awakening, the desert planet may be returning to the big screen sooner than expected, as recent rumors claim that Dune Messiah will begin filming a year earlier than previously scheduled.
