Hatsune Miku has recently done many different collabs, and McDonald’s Japan is about to become the latest one on her list. Miku has recently been featured in so many collaborations that she could be considered some sort of Queen of Collabs.
From Pokemon to Fortnite, it seems the sky is the limit when it comes to Miku popping up in many different IPs – or maybe not even the sky, as Miku did a collaboration with JAXA, the Japanese space agency, a few years ago. So, there are no limits at all: Miku can be everywhere.

There is a popular anime series that features insane collaborations, but it is unlikely to be licensed globally in the near future.

Miku and The Shaka Shaka Potato

Yesterday, the official McDonald’s Japan account posted a picture of a shade that resembled Miku, teasing the collaboration. Fans promptly replied with many jokes, but everyone guessed what it was about:

Today, McDonald’s confirmed that it will be collaborating with the virtual diva on Miku Day, which takes place on March 9. The number three can be read as “mi” and nine can be read as “ku” in Japanese, but these numbers can also be read as “san” and “kyu”, respectively, so they can mean “Thank you, Miku” (“sankyu miku”):

What will happen on Miku Day?

*No onion flavor

Shaka Shaka Potato are flavored potatoes available at McDonald’s Japan. Besides the collaboration, McDonald’s also announced that two new flavors will be available for a limited time, starting February 26 (Nori Salt and Garlic Black Pepper Mayo). It is not exactly clear what will happen on March 9, but it might be a new Shaka Shaka Potato flavor or special prizes to be given under certain conditions.

They are also launching Potato Nage, a set with fries and nuggets, and after 5 pm, customers will be able to order Shaka Shaka Potato Nage Oo/Tokudai (Large and Extra-Large portions).

A Hatsune Miku Movie Is in Theaters

Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing has been in theaters in Japan since January 17, and has already grossed over one billion yen (around 6.6 million dollars) at the box office. It is the first Hatsune Miku movie (although she appeared in Shinkalion‘s movie). However, it doesn’t seem that the collaboration is part of the marketing strategy of the movie – for now, it just looks like a coincidence.

Featuring other Vocaloid characters, the film is set to be released in the US on April 11, 2025. The Vocaloid characters are apparently voiced by the Vocaloid software (Saki Fujita is credited with voicing Miku), because they have that artificial tone to their voices.

GKIDS licenses Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing in the US.
