Accessories play a big part in making character builds for Avowed, and since players only have three slots for these items, they’ll need to be wise when it comes to choosing which ones to wear. One such accessory is Painter’s Brush, and it can be a key item in many DPS-oriented builds.
Enemies become very hard to kill in Avowed’s higher difficulty levels, and if you want to complete the game on Path of Damnation, you’ll need to squeeze out every bit of damage you can find from items and skills. Painter’s Brush can help you do exactly that, provided you can get to it.

Avowed: Painter’s Brush Location
You can find Painter’s Brush
in a chest in the Emerald Stair, the second open region in Avowed. The chest is due south of the Wildwood Outskirts Party Camp, which is across the bridge northwest of Fior mes Iverno.
To get Painter’s Brush, head to the map marker indicated in the image above. From the camp site, go directly south until you reach the cliff edge. There’s a cave in the lower portion of the cliff wall, and you’ll find Painter’s Brush inside a chest there.
The area surrounding the camp and cave are relatively safe. There should be no enemies roaming around, which is great considering how monsters in Wildwood are of Exceptional quality and above. You’ll need gear of matching quality in order to be at your most effective. Otherwise, your attacks will deal less damage and possibly bounce off of targets.
What Does Painter’s Brush Do?
This is a straightforward accessory occupying your Amulet slot that increases your critical hit chance by 5%. This isn’t much, but there are very few items in the game that increase your crit chance. This is especially useful for high-damage melee builds in Avowed, as you’re going to need all the damage you can get to compensate for a lack of magic.
Painter’s Brush is best paired with the Critical Strike passive from the Ranger skill tree. This gives you an additional crit chance of 25%, with an extra 3-9% based on what weapon you’re using. If you want to build hard into critical strikes, take the Devastating Criticals skill from the Fighter Tree as well to maximize your crit damage.
Other Crit Accessories
Painter’s Brush is the only accessory in the game that provides a flat crit chance bonus. If you want to further increase your crit chance, you’ll need to boost your Perception stat. The Ranga’s Clarity
ring is an excellent choice if you want more crit chance. Pair this with the following rings for even more crit synergy:
-
Ring of Pain Amplification
– General crit damage boost for all builds.
-
Ring of Prosperity’s Fortune
– Boosts your crit chance based on your total money.
-
Vindictive Band
– Crits deal Poison damage.
-
Ashfall’s Legacy
– Boosts crit chance and attack damage for pistols and arquebuses.
