Magic: The Gathering is gearing up for one of its most ambitious video game crossovers to date, as Final Fantasy is the next series coming to Universes Beyond. Earlier this week, Wizards of the Coast unveiled four new Commander Decks that will be part of the crossover, each one centering around a game in the Final Fantasy series, with cards of Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y’shtola representing their respective games.
It’s all been very exciting for both Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy fans, of which there is undoubtedly a lot of crossover, but that excitement was dampened a little bit once people saw the price of these decks. Revealed by IGN, these decks will launch on June 13 with an MSRP of $69.99 each, while the Collector’s Editions have an MSRP of $149.99.
Magic: The Gathering Fans Are Upset Over Final Fantasy Commander Deck Pricing
That’s a lot of cash to fork out for a standard set, and Magic: The Gathering fans are venting their frustrations via the usual social media channel. For example, a Reddit user called HimawariTenno recently took to the MagicTCG subreddit to call the prices “ridiculous”, worried about local game stores adding on further costs, and that they’re too high for a standard set.
Plenty of other fans then chime in with their frustrations, such as ContentCargo, who calls the prices the “new expensive standard”. Another user called PulitzerandSpara worries that these prices may become the new normal, what with Wizards of the Coast already having announced that roughly half of all standard sets will now be Universes Beyond, and that licensing fees that Wizards has to pay will be passed onto fans.
Of course, we still don’t know what all of these decks will actually include overall, so there’s a chance they could be stacked with pretty valuable cards and make the decks actually worthwhile for those prices. A lot of people don’t seem to be too optimistic, but we’ll get more details about the value of each deck in the near future.
