I’m loving the Hades-like renaissance happening right now. Plenty of excellent projects are taking what Supergiant Games created and morphing it into something totally new. I’ve been playing The Callisto Protocol spinoff [Redacted], the King Arthur-infused Sworn, and Windblown to name but a few. There are so, so many more waiting to be played, however, and Reignbreaker is one of them. With a demo you can play now and the release date coming soon, you can step into the shoes of an anarchist with an awful lot of weapons.
You’re Clef, a rebel without a cause in a dystopian medievalpunk world. The Queen’s evil, the Kingdom is oppressed, and you’re the only one who can make it right. That means you need to infiltrate the Bastion stronghold, smash the machine army to bits, and free the people. With an isometric style, high-octane combat, and loads of tough opponents, you can see Reignbreaker’s Hades inspirations straight away.
But this roguelike game is different. As Ken discovered in his Gamescom preview, Clef has an array of motorized javelins to experiment with in combat. You can take two into battle at any time, and swap between them on the fly. While the javelins are great for combos, you’ll still want to keep an eye on them to stop each from overheating. The javelins also have a standard skill, placed skill, and can be thrown. This means you can come up with plenty of combinations, as you put one javelin down and use another to get up close and personal.

You can also improve that run’s build with power-ups and modifiers, just like in Hades. Maybe you want to focus on throwing one Javelin and using the other like a turret? Or you’d rather get up close and flip between the two in quick succession. The choice is yours. So if you’re looking for a new game to try out between gargantuan Hades 2 updates, Reignbreaker is the perfect place to start.
