The critically acclaimed deck-building roguelike is now set to receive a sequel in the form of Monster Train 2, which Devolver Digital’s publishing label Big Fan announced on February 19. No firm release date has yet been attached to the project, with Big Fan only stating that the game is planned to debut sometime in 2025. In the meantime, PC gamers can already download the Monster Train 2 demo via Steam and wishlist the roguelike on Valve’s storefront.
Aside from PC, Monster Train 2 is also planned to launch for the Nintendo Switch and the current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. No official pricing information has yet been shared, but if the first game is any indication, its sequel may retail for $24.99. While Monster Train had a staggered release, reaching all of its currently supported systems one at a time, the new game is planned to have a day-one multi-platform launch.
The upcoming sequel promises to build on Monster Train‘s complex deck-building mechanics with the addition of new enemy factions and cards, among other elements. Players will be able to choose between five new playable clans, each boasting unique strengths conducive to certain strategies. Monster Train 2 will retain its predecessor’s basic gameplay loop of battling, recruiting units, upgrading cards, and experimenting, which many reviewers praised as highly compelling.
Monster Train 2 Will Introduce a New Card Type
Monster Train 2 is promised to feature hundreds of cards, many of which will be new. On that note, the game will introduce an entirely new card category of Room cards, designed to offer powerful boosts limited to a single train floor. More equipment parts offering powerful abilities will also be part of the package, together with new unit abilities that will require precise timing for maximum effect. Monster Train 2 will also incorporate an Endless Mode, new customization options, leaderboards, and run mutators, among other features.
