Though Avowed does a decent job explaining its mechanics and gameplay features for new players, many still don’t know how to break down gear. Avowed players must collect certain materials to upgrade weapons and armor at Camp.

In Avowed, playable races are not too different from one another, in terms of gameplay – but there aren’t many options for races in Avowed.

Though you can find these upgrade materials, out in the world, the best way to get upgrade materials is by breaking down extra equipment. This guide explains how to break down gear in Avowed on both PC and console, and lists what materials you can expect to receive by breaking down different types of gear.

How To Break Down Gear In Avowed

To break down gear, Avowed players must open up their character’s Inventory menu and scroll down to a piece of equipment that is not currently equipped. Only weapons and armor can be broken down for crafting parts – boots, gloves, accessories, rings, trinkets, and all other gear types cannot be salvaged for materials.

While you have the piece of equipment highlighted, look on the bottom-right of the screen to find your Break Down input.

• On PC, hold down the ‘R’ key to break down gear.
• Avowed players on console must hold down the ‘X’ button to break down gear.

You can preview the materials you will gain by breaking down gear in Avowed. Scroll down on the item description tofind the “Break Down” section, which displays a list of all upgrade materials you will get by dismantling that piece of gear.

Breaking Down Normal Weapons & Armor

Dismantling normal (non-Unique) weapons and armor will reward materials that can be used to upgrade both normal and Unique equipment. Depending on the upgrade level of the piece of equipment, you will get different materials when broken down. The stronger the piece of gear, the more materials you will get.

Every piece of gear that has been upgraded at least once will reward an Herb Material, which is used for just about every type of gear upgrade. If your gear is of a high tier, but at +0 upgrade level, it will not reward a herb when you break it down.

Breaking Down Unique Weapons & Armor

When you break down Unique equipment, Avowed players will get the same materials associated with each gear type and Tier, as well as Adra. Adra is used exclusively to upgrade Unique gear. Though it is possible to find Adra out in the world and as a reward from certain quests, it’s very rare.

The best way to get more Adra to upgrade Unique gear is to break down the Unique gear you aren’t using. It might feel wrong to get rid of something you can’t get back, but there are a lot of uniques in Avowed, and you certainly won’t use all of them.

When you break down Unique equipment, you will also get the normal upgrade materials associated with that gear type and its tier. Notably, Unique Gear can reach the Legendary upgrade tier, which rewards Legendary materials associated with each gear type if broken down:
