Season 2 will jump forward five years, picking up with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in Jackson, where they’ve been living with Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) since the events of the last season. An underutilized character from The Last of Us Part 2 will be expanded on in the HBO series and there are a few possible candidates for who it may be.

HBO’s The Last of Us Return Date Revealed By New Posters

After a long lead-up of teaser trailers and posters over the past few months, HBO has finally confirmed the release date for The Last of Us Season 2. As expected, the new season of The Last of Us will begin in the week following The White Lotus’ Season 3 finale, which puts its release date as April 13. The new season comprises seven episodes (two less than Season 1) that will be released weekly on Max, meaning the show will conclude in late May.

The release date was confirmed on a trio of new posters for The Last of Us Season 2, released via HBO’s social channels, each containing one of the show’s major cast members. Each of the posters contains the line “Every Path has a Price” and features one of Joel, Ellie, and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) with their backs turned. Ellie’s poster sees her walking along a path made up of a guitar, with a rifle over her shoulder and her switchblade in hand. Abby, a new character who will be introduced in Season 2, is identifiable by her long braid and walks along a path made up of a Firefly pendant. Meanwhile, Joel’s poster features his broken watch, and notably, he is shown looking to the left, while Abby and Ellie look to the right, which is a subtle hint at their journeys to come.

Marketing for Season 2 of The Last of Us has already raised questions among fans over how the show plans to tackle the complicated timeline of the second game. Similar to the first season, The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to contain deviations from the source material, along with some additional content that was cut from the game, which will help to keep things surprising for those familiar with its story. One deviation involving the character of Abby is already causing division among fans and the justification from showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann suggests that Season 2 will contain less “moment to moment” action. Now that the series has an official release date, audiences won’t have to wait long to find out what that looks like.

The Last of Us Season 2 will be released on April 13 on Max.
