As fans wait patiently for Fallout 5’s distant release, they can still look forward to free new updates for Fallout 76 for the foreseeable future, as well as season two of the Fallout show. Although Fallout 76 still has a long life ahead of itself thanks to the game’s frequent update schedule, having to carry the Fallout franchise would admittedly be a heavy burden to bear if Fallout 76 has to do it alone.
While the long wait for Fallout 5 could give the franchise ample opportunities to break new ground through spin-offs and remasters, none are confirmed. This means that Fallout 76 is under an unnecessary amount of pressure to deliver big hits with each of its updates, as it has to singlehandedly keep gamers fans occupied until Fallout 5 releases. Instead of letting Fallout 76 carry this weight alone, now would be the perfect time for an official Fallout spin-off game, or remakes/remasters of some of the original Fallout games to help hold fans over until Fallout 5.

While 2024 will be a hard year to compete with, 2025 is already shaping up to be another major year for Fallout 76 based on the franchise’s momentum.
Fallout 76 Can Keep Franchise Fans Busy Until Fallout 5, But it Shouldn’t Have To
It’s no secret that Fallout 76 was once an unpopular entry in the Fallout franchise. However, throughout the past six years since the game first released, Fallout 76 has had quite a comeback story. Countless free content updates and improvements have arguably redeemed the game’s previously troubled reputation, leading to peak player numbers in recent years that continue to grow. With seemingly no end in sight for the game’s ongoing support, Fallout 76 could very well continue to receive new content updates up to Fallout 5’s release, and long after.
Despite the future of Fallout 76 never looking brighter, many fans are naturally eager for the next standalone Fallout game, as Fallout 76 will be turning seven years old this year. So, while Fallout 76 could potentially carry the franchise until Fallout 5’s distant release if it absolutely has to, it is showing its age and may not appeal as much to singleplayer fans, which could make that task difficult. Because of this, now is arguably the perfect time for an official Fallout spin-off, remake, or remaster.
Why Right Now is the Perfect Time For a Fallout Spin-Off, Remake, or Remaster
While Bethesda presumably has its hands full with development for The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 for the next several years, the Fallout franchise could arguably benefit from inviting outside studios to explore spin-offs, remakes, and/or remasters. Not only could this allow Bethesda to take its time with Fallout 5’s development, ensuring a better overall game quality, but it could generally make the wait much more enjoyable for eager fans of the franchise, among other potential benefits. After all, the Obsidian-developed New Vegas was a massive hit, so perhaps another developer could capture that same kind of magic.
After the success of the Fallout show’s first season led to a surge in popularity for the Fallout franchise games, it would be wise to anticipate a similar situation surrounding the second season of the show, with Bethesda capitalizing on the hype this time via a new release. If a spin-off is not in the cards, then a modern re-release of some of the classic Fallout games sounds like the next best way for fans to refresh on the Fallout franchise timeline and overall lore ahead of season two, while also giving newfound fans of the franchise a convenient entry point.
Overall, official remasters or remakes of the classic Fallout games to make them more readily accessible on current-gen platforms are arguably long overdue anyway, but the long wait for Fallout 5 makes them seem like even more of a necessity. Although Fallout 76 could do its best to carry the franchise until then, it shouldn’t have that extra weight to carry.
