The importance of companions in Avowed is shown quite early as you’re fighting alongside your crew member in Northreach Fort. The sheer number of enemies you fight at the same time in this game can be easily overwhelming if your companions don’t distract some of them.

Apart from taking enemy aggro, each main companion fulfills a special role, with Yatzli being the last one you unlock in Shatterscarp. She can be one of the most useful companions during combat if you use her correctly.
Yatzli Abilities, Explained
The main ability that differentiates the four companion from each other is their special exploration ability. The special abilities of the other three companions can be replaced to an extent with certain collectibles, but Yatzli is the only one with an irreplaceable ability.
You’ll start seeing purple-colored illusions during your exploration and the main story from Shatterscarp, and she’s the only one who can remove these. Apart from that, you can use these abilities with her during combat:
Essence Explosion |
Upon activation, Yatzli opens a portal that spawns a giant orb and drops it on the target enemy. This deals damage in a small AoE while also knocking back the enemy. With upgrades, you can reduce this ability’s cooldown, increase its explosion radius, and let it deal fire accumulation to the enemies. |

Minoletta’s Missile Battery |
This ability also spawns an orb above the target, but this orb stays in the air and continuously launches missiles at the surrounding enemies. With Shock Aspect, you can also make these missiles deal shock accumulation. Other upgrades can increase the missile rate of fire and the radius of the ability. |
Arduous Delay of Motion |
This is a simple ability that slows down an enemy for a few seconds. You can turn this ability into a multi-target one with the Exhausting Field upgrade, and also increase its slow effect while applying frost with other upgrades. |
Blast |
This passive lets Yatzli’s attacks burst into a small area after hitting the first enemy. With Explosive Blast, you can make this AoE damage remove enemy blocks, break walls, and deal increased damage to frozen enemies. With upgrades, this ability can also inflict a random debuff on the enemy and deal increased stun. |
Yatzli Upgrade Priority
Getting companion points can be very rare in Avowed, and you can spend up to 15 on them for each companion. Every time you get a companion ability point, you can spend one on every companion, and here’s what you should upgrade on Yatzli:
Unlock Priority |

When Should You Use Yatzli?
Once you get Yatzli in Shatterscarp, she becomes an essential member of your party due to the lack of means to break illusions. However, this isn’t a bad thing since she can essentially replace Marius as your DPS party member. Yatzli can deal high damage to both single-target and multi-target enemies.
You can also use both Marius and Yatzli at the same time since she can deal increased stun to the enemies.
Marius can instantly defeat high-stun enemies with one of his abilities, making this a good synergy.
After getting Yatzli, you’d essentially want to keep her in the party at all times, but she works well with all three other companions so you can choose anyone for the second slot based on your build and play style.
