There’s always something new to be discovered in Baldur’s Gate 3, which will likely remain true for many more years to come. This latest discovery comes courtesy of SaphyreDark, who completed Larian Studios‘ epic without recruiting any party members or non-party allies.
Since the player character doesn’t have any allies, the epilogue feast is more or less devoid of participants. Some ‘default’ characters could still appear, such as Volo, Scratch and the Owlbear, but their presence doesn’t affect the triggering of Withers’ ‘lone wolf’ dialogue.
Party of One
In his monologue, Withers congratulates the player for essentially saving Faerun without assistance. This dialogue is different from his usual remarks which encourage everyone to catch up and enjoy one another’s company for a final time. The rare dialogue is as follows:
Thou hast arrived. Some call you “saviour”. Others “adventurer” – or “adversary.” But under this night’s sky, upon familiar ground, thou mayest simply be called friend. Though the weight of the realms were great, thy shoulders bore them admirably. Take rest, as no quill will record thy steps tonight, nor any god rally thy duty. Go, dine, and delight in the music filling the air. – Withers
The idea of Withers throwing a big feast to congratulate the player on their thankless task of stopping the Netherbrain is poetic. A couple of commenters have reported triggering this dialogue even with party members present, so the exact conditions necessary for Withers to say this monologue are unknown. Usually, Withers ends his monologue with “Go. Know one another once more.”
A solo run of Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the most common approach to finishing the game, but it does provide some unique and humorous moments. During the ‘Gather Your Allies’ quest in Act 3’s Upper City, the Flaming Fist Beorn Wunterbrood normally gives a rousing speech to your assembled allies who will instead be found dead nearby. Withers will then bemoan the player’s lack of allies, and chastise them for their poor diplomacy skills. At least I’ll always have you, Withers.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s eighth and final patch is currently undergoing private playtests, with no official release date confirmed as of yet. Larian has announced several features for Patch 8, including crossplay, photo mode and a new subclass for every playable class. Knowing Larian, there will probably be some unannounced goodies too.
