Adventures In Gameland Cartridges Can Break Your NES

Summary

  • Limited Run’s Rugrats: Adventures In Gameland and PioPow cartridges are breaking people’s NES consoles.
  • LRG has issued a statement confirming the problem and explaining what people who bought the game need to do next.
  • If you own the cartridge you can either request a refund or wait for a replacement.

The Rugrats returned to the video game world last year via the release of Rugrats: Adventures In Gameland. The retro nature of the new game meant Limited Run Games was able to create a NES version, complete on a cartridge compatible with Nintendo‘s first console. However, LRG has this week issued a statement urging owners of the cartridge not to use it with a NES as there’s a chance it’ll not only break the game, but brick the console.

In an email to those who ordered the game (shared by videogamedeals), or in some cases are still awaiting pre-orders, LRG explains it was made aware of issues with the Adventures In Gameland cartridges and, following its own investigation, can confirm that in some cases, an issue with voltage regulation can damage the game and possibly break the NES being used to play it.

The same issue has been identified with NES cartridges for PioPow which were also issued by LRG in 2024. LRG attributes the root of the problem being the manufacturer that created the cartridges not being the same one it usually relies on. Even though its usual manufacturer of modern-day NES-compatible cartridges is a reliable one, LRG is currently in the process of going back through its back catalog just in case the manufacturer of the Rugrats and PioPow cartridges had a hand in the creation of any of its other games.

Limited Run Is Handling The Situation And In The Process Of Issuing Replacements And Refunds

As for the advice given to those who already own the cartridges, while LRG is urging owners not to continue using them, you will not have to return the cartridge to receive a replacement or be issued a refund. As noted above, some orders have not yet been fulfilled, and those orders will now be postponed until the reliable supplier has made replacement cartridges. Those who pre-ordered the collector’s edition have the option of receiving it as planned with the updated cartridge following at a later date.

As for those who already have the cartridges, LRG will be in touch if they haven’t already and will be sending out replacement cartridges in due course. There’s no need to send the faulty cartridges back. If you simply don’t want the game anymore, you can contact LRG’s customer service department for a full refund.
