Yatzli’s Companion Skills and Combat Role Explained

Yatzli's Companion Skills and Combat Role Explained

Yatzli appears to have an important role in Avowed‘s story, as she studies the Godless who used to inhabit The Living Lands, so it stands to reason that many players will want her along for the ride. If that’s not enough, however, she’s one of two companions in Avowed who focus on magic.

There are many reasons to use an Avowed companion in combat, and to be fair, pretty much all of them have some kind of “magic.” Kai has some fire magic despite being a Fighter-type character, Marius’s survival skills lend some nature magic, and Giatta has a lot of supporting magic. However, Yatzli is described as slinging spells her whole life, which is reflected in her combat skills. Essentially, as lead area designer James Agay tells us for Game Rant Advance, she’s basically “gone all the way down the wizard tree.”

Avowed: Yatzli is Your Wizard

Magic is important in Avowed‘s setting of Eora, so it only makes sense that at least one of the companions is a full-on magic user. Her personality may draw in fans, but her skills in combat are going to be why many players keep her. The end result is that she can do a little bit of everything from crowd control-styled magic to massive AOEs. As Agay explained,

“She lobs massive explosions, dispels illusions, launches volleys of missiles, and can stun, slow, and freeze enemies.”

Of course, balance is always an important consideration in any RPG, not just companion-based ones. If Yatzli can do a little bit of everything when it comes to magic in Avowed, she needs some form of drawback. That drawback? She is a glass cannon, as many could no doubt guess. Agay explained that “she can’t take too many hits, but she has a lot of attitude so I always pick her.” Indeed, her combat skills go right along with her bombastic, flirtatious, and over-the-top personality, likely meaning any outing with Yatzli is one to remember.

Party synergy is an important part of any companion-based game, and that’s true for Avowed as well. Players can take any two companions with them at a time, and once she’s recruited, her role is pretty well defined within the party. She likely pairs well with Avowed companion Giatta, who is capable of providing support to both her and the protagonist. This is especially true if players are more of a DPS/tank-style character who can draw enemy attention. If they aren’t, then Kai fulfills that role as well and would make another good pairing with Yatzli since he’s effective at drawing aggro. That said, Marius and Yatzli have opposing personality types, so seeing them in a party together is no doubt a lot of fun. Avowed players will be spoiled for choice when it comes to companions, at least.
