Quick Links
Players in Avowed can make entire builds based on the items they have, and the game has no shortage of unique weapons and armor to play around with. Among this extensive list of equipment is Horsecutter, a weapon that’s perfect for aggressive melee playstyles.
Despite the game having an emphasis on magic, players can still go with a pure melee build that’s just as effective as the rest. Horsecutter can serve as the keystone of such a build, and thankfully, you can get it relatively early on in Avowed.

Here’s an overview of Avowed’s difficulty levels, including how to change your difficult and notes on what changes for each setting.
Avowed Horsecutter Location
You can find Horsecutter in the Emerald Stair, the second playable zone after Dawnshore. The sword is in the hands of some sort of skeleton lord in a cove by the southern coast. The skeleton is still very much alive, and if you want Horsecutter, you need to prove yourself worthy of it. Get ready for a fight, and if you haven’t upgraded your items in Avowed yet, now would be a good time to do so.
Interact with the skeleton lord to start a combat challenge. His bodyguard will start attacking you and your party, and once you take him down, more skeleton fighters will rise and fight. The scuffle can get quite messy, especially if you’re on the hardest difficulty. Focus on the archers and healers, and order your companions to keep the Skeleton Monks and other melee enemies occupied.
Once you beat all the skeletons in the cove, return to the skeletal lord, and he’ll give you Horsecutter as a reward for your victory.
How Good is Horsecutter?
Horsecutter
is a two-handed sword. As such, it deals high amounts of both regular and Stun damage. This weapon comes with two unique effects:
- Horsecutting Strokes: A full combo attack deals high Stun damage
- Bleeding Slash: Hits deal bonus Bleed Damage
Judging by the weapon’s unique effects, Horsecutter is designed to be spammed. In order to get the most out of the weapon, you’ll want high Stamina and Attack Speed so you can Stun enemies and inflict Bleed as quickly as possible.
Keep in mind that every point in Dexterity increases your Attack Speed by a small amount, though you’ll start getting diminishing returns once you put five points into Dexterity. If you want to further improve your Attack Speed, it’d be better to use items that increase your Dexterity instead of allocating more points into it as you level up. Also, Giatta, one of Avowed’s companions, has a skill that increases the team’s Attack Speed for a short duration.
