On February 18, Magic: The Gathering revealed an in-depth look at the Final Fantasy crossover set, and shared a glimpse at four Commander Decks that are themed around the Final Fantasy franchise’s top mainline games. Preorders for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering crossover set, which also includes the Final Fantasy Starter Kit and booster packs, are now available ahead of the crossover’s June 13 release.
First revealed in October 2024 with a few cards featuring characters like Emet-Selch and Lightning, the crossover between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy is part of MTG‘s “Universes Beyond” booster series. Universes Beyond has also consisted of crossovers from franchises such as Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed and Marvel’s Spider-Man. While other Universes Beyond boosters are not considered part of MTG‘s ruleset, the Final Fantasy set has been confirmed as legal for standard play. Ergo, Final Fantasy can be considered the 105th overall expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The Final Fantasy set will include over 100 legendary creature cards, of which 55 of them will be borderless.

Magic: The Gathering Shares More Final Fantasy Crossover Details
The four Final Fantasy Commander Decks feature characters from the franchise’s most popular mainline entries, including Final Fantasy 7‘s Cloud Strife and Final Fantasy 10‘s Tidus. Two of the Final Fantasy series’ leading ladies, Terra Branford from Final Fantasy 6 and Y’shtola Rhul from Final Fantasy 14, are also part of the Commander Deck roster. Along with contributions from various artists, cards also feature past artwork by Final Fantasy series artists Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura.
Double-faced cards that allow creatures to transform into more powerful cards when conditions are met are also part of the Final Fantasy set. For example, Final Fantasy 14‘s Emet-Selch can transform into Hades whenever the player has 14 or more cards in the graveyard. A new card type called Saga Creatures combines the Saga mechanic with a creature card that can cast powerful attacks after gaining a lore counter. Classic Final Fantasy Summons like Shiva are considered Saga Creatures, and can quickly turn the tide of a match.
A Final Fantasy Starter Kit containing two pre-made decks featuring Final Fantasy 7‘s Cloud and Sephiroth is also available for new Magic: The Gathering players to get into the game. It remains to be seen how many Final Fantasy characters will be featured in the full set.
