What are the best weapons in Avowed? If you’re constantly changing out your weapons or finding new gear and you’re not sure which direction to take your build in, we’ve put together a list of the best early-game weapons to get you started.

The best Avowed builds largely depend on which weapon you’ve invested in. With four upgrade tiers available for each normal weapon and further upgrades within that, it can be a little overwhelming to know where to put those hard-earned upgrade materials. We recommend seeking out unique weapons, which boast powerful stats and enchantments that can be upgraded five times to legendary tier. As upgrade materials are also quite scarce at the beginning of the game, and combat becomes increasingly unforgiving, we’ve put together a list of Avowed weapons to give you the best start.

The best early-game weapons in Avowed are:

  • Drawn in Winter
  • Last Light of Day
  • Caeroc’s Pride
  • Sheathed in Summer
  • Anextli’s Grimoire
  • Beothel’s Grimoire

We’ve chosen unique weapons that span swords, pistols, and magic, depending on your playstyle. All of these Avowed weapons are available in the first Avowed map, Dawnshore, and can either be purchased from a merchant, found in a specific area, earned by completing a quest, or defeating a boss.

It might also be worth picking them up anyway, as Avowed weapons can be broken down into upgrade materials to further rank up other weapons you might prefer to switch to later on in the game. Though these are the best early weapons we’ve seen, we’ll be sure to update this guide with a list of all the best weapons for each map and how you can get them.

Caeroc’s Pride

You can find this unique pistol early on in your playthrough at an island just east of The Catch. It’s a powerful one-handed ranged weapon that deals shock damage. To get it, you need to take on Tempestuous Luandi. He’s a tough early boss, dealing very accurate blows from the pistol. It’s worth it though, as these are the stats for Caerco’s Pride.

  • 46 Physical Damage
  • 20 Stun
  • 20 Stamina Cost
  • 3% Critical Hit Chance
  • Distant Thunder – Power attacks deal high shock accumulation
  • Shocking Lash – Hits deal 10% bonus shock damage

Sheathed in Summer

This unique, one-handed sword is a bit further afield, but is one of the best early-game weapons, and well worth the tough boss you need to fight to get it. Sheathed in Summer can be found in the Godless Ruins, west of the Shrine of Woedica and just southwest of Pilgrim’s Path. You need to take on Octav The Firebrand and his allies before claiming the sword.

  • 32 Physical Damage
  • 10 Stun
  • 11 Stamina Cost
  • 3% Critical Hit Chance
  • Golden Sun’s Ascent – Killing an enemy restores 3% of your maximum health
  • Dawn’s Remembrance – Hits deal +10% bonus fire damage

Drawn in Winter

This nimble, unique axe is one of our favorite early-game weapons. It deals frost damage and you can pick it up pretty easily. It can be found at Watcher’s Mirror, southeast of the Shrine of Woedica. The axe is lodged into a stone sitting in the middle of a pond. When you yank it free, enemies will spawn in, so be prepared.

  • 36 Physical Damage
  • 14 Stun
  • 15 Stamina Cost
  • 6% Critical Hit Chance
  • Rising Chill – Power attacks deal moderate frost accumulation to nearby enemies
  • Freezing Lash – Hits deal +10% bonus frost damage

Last Light of Day

This unique, hard-hitting blade does have impressive stats, but it’s a little trickier to reach and requires some extra work compared to other weapons on this list. You need to head to the Eothasian Temple in Pilgrim’s Path, just north of Northern Farms Beacon. Once at the temple, you meet Sargamis, who sets you on a quest to retrieve the Splinter of Eothas. When you return, you have the option to either hand over the item or keep it for yourself. If you choose to keep it, a fight ensues and you can take down Sargamis to get his weapon.

  • 32 Physical Damage
  • 10 Stun
  • 11 Stamina Cost
  • 3% Critical Hit Chance
  • Golden Sun’s Ascent – Killing an enemy restores 3% of your maximum health
  • Dawn’s Remembrance – Hits deal +10% bonus fire damage

Anextli’s Grimoire

If you’re playing as a wizard, this unique Grimoire can be found in Ivona’s Threshold, at the top of the cliff that overlooks the graveyard. You do have to fight a few enemies on the way, but you won’t have to fight anyone for the Grimoire; in fact, you stumble on the owner who accidentally lights himself on fire, and you take it from his remains.

  • -28% Ability Cost
  • -15% Cooldown
  • Fan of Flames
  • Arcane Veil
  • Grimoire Snap (unlocks at level 5)
  • Missile Salvo (unlocks at level 10)

Beothel’s Grimoire

This is another unique Grimoire that you can purchase at a high price and that comes highly recommended by our Avowed reviewer. You can buy Beothel’s Grimoire from Merylin in the market district in Paradis City, and it has the following stats and spells:

  • -28% Ability Cost
  • -15% Cooldown
  • Corrosive Siphon
  • Arcane Veil
  • Parasitic Staff
  • Blizzard
