Super Mario 64 Speedrunner’s Run Doesn’t Count After Technical Error

Bubzia, a renowned speedrunner known for his attempts at blasting through games while wearing a blindfold, nearly broke his world record for Super Mario 64. Except, if he did, it wouldn’t have counted.

The reason? Early into his run, his webcam shut off. Those who speedrun games blindfolded are required to have their webcams on for the entirety of the run, in order to prove no tampering took place.

Naturally, being blindfolded and all, Bubzia wasn’t aware of the technical mishap and continued to keep at his run, maintaining his record-breaking pace.

In the end, the world record was not to be. The skilled streamer finished about a minute shy of tying his own mark, meaning that even though the run was invalid, at least it wasn’t a record-breaking one.

With so much on the line, his chat was hoping that he didn’t break the record. “Take your time,” one user wrote in the stream. Another chimed in with, “I pray for his downfall.”

It might be one of the first cases of someone hoping you fail, but with good intentions behind it. After all, few things would sting more than setting a record only for it to not count. Thankfully, it appears that the gamer has found a way to mitigate any camera issues in the future. In an updated post on Twitter, they noted that they had managed to not only fix the problem, but they’re also thinking of a solution. All is well that ends well, we suppose, though most of us would’ve likely smashed a controller in similar circumstances.
