- Players want the opossum in Stardew Valley as a pet, but it’s not currently an option in the vanilla game.
- The 1.6 update allows multiple pets; players hope for opossum to be added to the list alongside cats, dogs, & turtles.
- While the developer has not made wild animals adoptable, a mod from 2019 allows players to have an opossum-like pet.
Stardew Valley players are expressing their fondness for the game’s opossum, and want to adopt it as a pet. The recently added Stardew Valley critter has quite a few fans, it seems, and those players may need a mod or another update from ConcernedApe to fulfill their wish.
The Stardew Valley 1.6 update added the ability to get as many pets as a player wants. All a Stardew Valley farmer needs to do is to reach max hearts with their existing pet, and then they can purchase more via pet licenses from Marnie
. Currently, players can choose from cats, dogs, and turtles to join their home, but it seems players want at least one more animal on that list.

On Reddit, user meloriot shared a screenshot of their farmer following an opossum down a path, with the title indicating that the player wants another pet license from Marnie for the opossum. Since then, many players have chimed in talking about how much they enjoy their random encounters with the opossum, or how much they like the animal in general. Several have indicated that if it were possible, they would love to catch the opossum and make it a member of their household. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible in the vanilla game at this time.
Will Stardew Valley Add Opossum Pets?
Stardew Valley developer ConcernedApe has added a ton of content to the game over the years, which may make some have hope that the opossum could become a pet with enough fan demand. While it’s not out of the question should the fans make enough of a fuss, it’s ultimately up to the developer. Adding an opossum to the family farm might be something he isn’t interested in, as the opossum is a wild animal, and the developer has made no attempt to make wild animals adoptable in the past, even though there are a number of them that the player can come across and even befriend, like Stardew Valley‘s trash bear.
While it remains to be seen if players will be able to get a pet license for this particular creature someday, modding Stardew Valley is an option for those on PC. Although the official opossum was added to Stardew Valley in 2024, a mod to adopt a opossum has actually been available since 2019, which essentially changes the texture of a cat to make it look like a opossum. While not exactly what fans are wishing for, it might help to satisfy the need to make friends with the wild one.
