There are a total of 15 Legendary Fish in Red Dead Redemption 2 that can be added to the Compendium progress, but only 13 of them are catchable outside of specific side missions. As such, we have made Arthur Morgan the ultimate fisherman to obtain every Legendary Fish in Red Dead Redemption 2 to provide their locations, what Special Lure is needed, and effective strategies on how to catch them.

15
Legendary Bluegill
A Bluegill Around 19 Inches in Length
- Location: West of Rhodes, Scarlett Meadows, when facing Flat Iron Lake
- Lure: Special Lake Lure
The Bluegill is gigantic in size when compared to other simpler and more common variants of the fish, and players can find this one with the Special Lake Lure once they start to fish in Flat Iron Lake just West of Rhodes and Braithwaite Manor. It’s not a complex fish to find, and it doesn’t fight too much when it’s been reeled in.
14
Legendary Chain Pickerel
A Rather Large River-Dwelling Pickerel
- Location: Dakota River, North West of Flatneck Station near Horseshoe Overlook
- Lure: Special River Lure
The Legendary Chain Pickerel weighs around 9 pounds and is around 19 inches long, providing Arthur with a truly beautiful bounty. Arthur can find this fish with the Special River Lure once he heads to the Dakota River just near Flatneck Station and Horseshoe Overlook, where the running waters will have this mighty catch waiting.
13
Legendary Bullhead Catfish
A Large Catfish Lurking in the Penitentiary Waters
- Location: West of Sisika Penitentiary, Lemoyne
- Lure: Special Swamp Lure
Taking a boat out from the swamps of Lemoyne and heading East of Saint Denis will see Arthur infiltrate the murky swamp area surrounding the Sisika Penitentiary. Players won’t want to get too close, as this is a restricted area, but the outside areas to the West are safe to fish, where players can find the Legendary Bullhead Catfish with the Special Swamp Lure.

12
Legendary Redfin Pickerel
The Gentle Pickerel of Stillwater Creek
- Location: Stillwater Creek, West of Thieves Landing, New Austin
- Lure: Special River Lure
As players enter into New Austin, past Blackwater, they can head to the small Stillwater Creek in search of the Redfin Pickerel, noted by, obviously, its red fins. This is a relatively small fish that doesn’t put up much of a fight, but the true difficulty here lies in the fact that players need to be in the Epilogue to start their fishing hunt since the invisible New Austin sniper will instantly kill Arthur if he dares to cross past Blackwater.
11
Legendary Rock Bass
A Fifty-Inch Dead-Eyed Fish
- Location: Aurora Basin, West of Manzanita Post, Tall Trees
- Lure: Special Lake Lure
The Legendary Rock Bass has shimmering haunting eyes that are not worth looking into once players catch it, as this catch is ripe for Jeremy Gill’s collection thanks to its size and rare eyes. The Legendary Rock Bass is found in Aurora Basin, a lovely fishing spot for players if they can survive the invisible sniper that will pick Arthur off – so again, this is a Legendary Fish best reserved for the Epilogue.
10
Legendary Largemouth Bass
The Gigantic Largemouth Bass of the San Luis River
- Location: South East of Lake Don Julio in the San Luis River, New Austin
- Lure: Special River Lure
The Legendary Largemouth Bass will put up quite the fight due to its absurdly large size, even as a Largemouth Bass. Unfortunately for most, this is going to be a hard catch considering it’s so far West in New Austin, and heading here as Arthur is practically a death sentence from the invisible sniper and the bounty hunters – so maybe leave this fish for the Epilogue.
9
Legendary Smallmouth Bass
The River Legend of Owanjila
- Location: Owanjila, West of Strawberry
- Lure: Special Lake Lure
Another giant fish that weighs over 20 pounds and comes in at over 50 inches long, the Legendary Smallmouth Bass is anything but small, so fishermen who get lucky and catch this beauty with a Special Lake Lure will most likely want to keep it stowed on their horse to show off their mighty catch that lurks in the beautiful waters of Owanjila.
8
Legendary Perch
A Grotesque Mutated Fish of Elysian Pool
- Location: Elysian Pool, West of Butcher Creek
- Lure: Special Lake Lure
The Elysian Pool can be a beautiful spot, but the polluted waters near Butcher Creek make this wonderful spot desolate and filled with disfigured and rotted fish, which is exactly what the Legendary Perch is once players catch it and note its haunting eyes and rotting scales, all made possible thanks to the Special Lake Lure.
7
Legendary Lake Sturgeon
A Lengthy and Sharp Sturgeon Awaiting Capture
- Location: North East of Shady Belle, by the train tracks leading to Saint Denis
- Lure: Special River Lure
Saint Denis might be a polluted city that makes Dutch Van der Linde sick with civilization, but it’s also the nearby home of the Legendary Lake Sturgeon, which players can fish for by the railroad tracks. Whether it’s on the tracks or by the separated islands accessible by a canoe, the Legendary Lake Sturgeon puts up a decent fight due to its giant size and makes a grand impression with its sharp spine.

Legendary Steelhead Trout
A Tropical Blue Fish Near Willard’s Rest
- Location: West of Willard’s Rest, past Brandywine Drop, Roanoke Ridge
- Lure: Special River Lure
The Legendary Steelhead Trout is a beautiful monster with an incredible weight and size to it that catching such a thing will prove the amazing potential Arthur Morgan has as a fisherman. The Steelhead Trout has elegant blue scales, and the fishing spot alone is surrounded by a beautiful waterfall that makes catching this such a treat – just be careful of Murfree Brood in the area.
5
Legendary Longnose Gar
A Heavy Gar That Fights in the Swamps
- Location: Center of Lagras, Bayou Nwa
- Lure: Special Swamp Lure
While the Bayou Nwa might be overwhelming with the Night Folk and Agnes Dowd the ghost lady of the swamp, it’s best to hunt in the morning or during the day to avoid any unsavory business, as this swamp fish that lurks in the waters of Lagras just South of Bluewater Marsh, is going to be quite the catch. It’s heavy in size so it will fight on the line once hooked, so players need patience to catch this beast.
4
Legendary Muskie
A Muskie That’s Over 50 Inches Long
- Location: East of Van Horn Trading Post, by the Lighthouse
- Lure: Special River Lure
Fishing off of the Lighthouse in Van Horn Trading Post is the best way to find the Legendary Muskie, which is a true beast of the seas. The Muskie is huge, with over thirty pounds to its weight and fifty inches in length, it’s a catch that’s going to take quite some strength and patience to reel in with the Special River Lure as the most effective bait.
3
Legendary Socket Salmon
The Giant Salmon of Lake Isabella
- Location: Lake Isabella, Ambarino
- Lure: Special Lake Lure
The Legendary Socket Salmon is a majestic beast weighing in at over fifty pounds. It’s a huge fish that will certainly feed the Van der Linde gang for a few days, and its beautiful scales make for quite a sight that Jeremy Gill will desperately want in his collection. However, the cold weather of Ambarino will make it so that Arthur has to get dressed for the occasion, and the giant size of this fish will take quite a few reels and pulls off a fishing rod to bring it to shore from the frozen lake.
The next two Legendary Fish are only obtained in the Compendium during specific side missions.
2
Legendary Northern Pike
The Tyrant of Hamish Sinclair
- Location: O’Creagh’s Run, Grizzlies East, Ambarino
- Obtained by: Complete The Veteran Part 2
The Legendary Northern Pike can only be found and caught with Hamish Sinclair during his side-mission chain found in Chapter 6 and the Epilogue, The Veteran, in O’Creagh’s Run. When Hamish and Arthur go fishing, they catch more than they bargained for with the Tyrant, a legendary Northern Pike with the scars to prove its monstrous experience as a surviving fish.
1
Legendary Channel Catfish
Jeremy Gill’s El Diablo Amarillo (The Yellow Devil)
- Location: San Luis River, South of Benedict Point
- Obtained by: Complete A Fisher of Fish Part 2
The Legendary Channel Catfish cannot actually be caught in-game, but it is added automatically to the Compendium once players catch other Legendary Fish and mail them to Jeremy Gill, and then obtain the A Fisher of Fish Part 2 quest, only available in the Epilogue. This fish is a part of cut content, and it cannot be obtained in-game, but the reason Jeremy Gill was taken into the waters by it was due to the fact that Compendium states that it’s over 90 inches long and weighs over 180 pounds.
