It won’t be long before the ban hammer falls on them.
While there are a handful of ways to counter the Dragon-type Pokemon, it appears an unlikely hero has risen from the ashes, and that hero is Bidoof.
Druddigon’s annoyance comes from its Rough Skin ability, which deals 20 damage to any Pokemon that dares to deal damage to it. Coupled with a Rocky Helmet, Druddigon is one of the most annoying Pokemon (or most useful, depending on which side of the play area you sit) in the entire game.
There have been a handful of counters used by this point, including those that switch the active Pokemon with one on the bench, but the way that Druddigon’s ability and Rocky Helmet are worded means that it’s Bidoof’s time to shine.
Both Rough Skin and Rocky Helmet specify that the Pokemon need to be “damaged by an attack” for the effect to take place. Technically, Bidoof doesn’t do that.
It’s Super Fang attack, which costs two colorless energies to use, halves the opponent’s Active Pokemon’s remaining HP, mentioning nothing about actually “damaging” the Pokemon. This means that Bidoof is effectively immune to both Rocky Helmet and Druddigon’s rough skin.
It also means that in just two turns, Bidoof can deal 80 damage to the Cave Pokemon. With Druddigon’s energy requirements, it’s unlikely that the Pokemon is going to deal damage back, leading to something of a stalemate as neither Pokemon can be KO’d. That is unless you pair a Greninja with the Bidoof, which can then snipe Druddigon’s remaining HP.
It’s an interesting strategy using a Pokemon that has affectionately been nicknamed “God” and time will tell how viable it actually is in the long run.
