Pokemon Shows Off Wife’s Old TCG Collection

A Pokemon fan has shared the old collection of Pokemon TCG cards that his wife collected when she was younger, with some impressive finds. Fellow players have been surprised by the collection, pointing out a number of Pokemon TCG cards that are either rare or are old versions with banned art.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game has been around for decades, and with it, thousands of cards have been released. A number of Pokemon TCG cards have gained value as they’ve aged, due to limited release and scores of them becoming lost or damaged over the years. As a result, players are always intrigued to see a time capsule like this one.

Reddit user Ampddaynnight shared some photographs, explaining that they and their wife had just visited their in-laws and relocated the wife’s old collection. The Pokemon card binder looks to be in incredible condition, and it’s done a good job of protecting the front faces of the cards. The collection is expansive, and players have already pointed out that there are a number of Shadowless Pokemon cards, including Machamp, Gyarados, and Nidoking. However, there are some problems, as Ampddaynnight has indicated that while the cards look great from the front, some of them have become stuck in their sleeves and have some damage as a result.

Pokemon Card Collection Includes Some Banned Rarities

While First Edition and Shadowless cards are certainly impressive, the collection contains both Japanese and English-language cards. Some of the Japanese Pokemon cards were banned in the west due to their original illustrations. Namely, the Misty’s Tears and Sabrina’s Gaze cards. Misty’s Tears was banned due to the card art involving nudity, and Sabrina’s Gaze was banned because her hand pose could be mistakenly confused with flashing a middle finger. While the ban of Misty’s card makes sense, in Sabrina’s case, it’s likely that nothing negative was intended with the illustration. However, considering some of the early hysteria with certain groups alleging that Pokemon was a bad influence on kids or downright demonic, it’s easy to see why the illustration was altered for western releases.

While this Pokemon treasure trove may not have as much monetary value as some fans would like due to damage to the cards, it’s nonetheless a cool time capsule. Whether the owners decide to sell some of them or keep them, it’s neat to see some of these old classics, especially for fans of the original Ken Sugimori Pokemon illustrations.
