Overture Triples Down on Its Bloodborne Parallels

Overture Triples Down on Its Bloodborne Parallels

As a voice states in the reveal trailer for Lies of P: Overture, “it’s been far, far too long.” Lies of P launched in September 2023 and, with a fascinating post-credits tease and the later promise of both a DLC and sequel, the IP is blossoming into something quite special. Quite a while has passed and Neowiz had only left breadcrumbs for Overture in the form of two pieces of concept art and a vinyl record track. Thankfully, the wait is almost over as Lies of P: Overture has been given a release window of Summer 2025, which is notably pushed back a bit from Q1 2025 as was previously stated about the DLC’s launch.

Lies of P: Overture’s State of Play trailer is light on story details besides the fact that it takes place in the past, but the implications made are incredibly exciting. It seems as if players will meet the real Alidoro, for example, and it’ll be intriguing to witness the outbreak of the Puppet Frenzy massacre in the Belle Epoque-era’s late-19th century Krat in a wintry setting. Interestingly, Lies of P’s base game was heavily compared to FromSoftware’s Bloodborne, at least concerning Lies of P’s tone and aesthetic as a ‘Soulslike’ game in pre-release marketing, and Overture seems to bear its own resemblances.

Lies of P’s DLC May Have a Hard Time Escaping the Shadow of its Genre Influences

Lies of P managed to become a breakout hit in the soulslike space, but now it will have to prove itself with its DLC, which has stiff competition.

Lies of P: Overture is Taking the Route of Bloodborne’s Old Hunters DLC

While stating that Krat being blanketed in snow emulates Bloodborne’s Castle Cainhurst would be a stretch, Overture takes place in the past—and is even unapologetically billed as a prequel—not unlike how Bloodborne’s own DLC, The Old Hunters, explores past events. Neowiz claiming that it didn’t intentionally parallel Bloodborne and only took inspiration from FromSoftware is perfectly valid, and yet the parallels continue nonetheless—likely in Lies of P’s best interests, too.

Bloodborne follows FromSoftware’s Dark Souls tradition of having convoluted lore and less of a tailored narrative, and that’s true of its Old Hunters DLC as players visit Yharnam in the Hunter’s Nightmare; meanwhile, Lies of P is far more story- and character-driven. Therefore, it may be fair to presume that any dangling story beats or unanswered base game questions will be resolved by traveling to the past in Overture, especially if this prequel chapter has been described as a means to close the book on Lies of P:

Lies of P: Overture’s Shark Monster is Reminiscent of Bloodborne’s Shark-Giants

Lies of P: Overture’s State of Play trailer offers glimpses of characters and antagonists who players will come across, and one in particular may stand out from the pack. Indeed, Overture features a grotesque shark enemy, which is not terribly distinct from The Old Hunters’ Shark-Giant foes. Shark-Giants are admittedly more humanoid than Overture’s shark enemy seems to be, and it’s possible that the latter is a boss and not an ordinary enemy players will find aimlessly roaming.

Lies of P and Bloodborne’s DLCs boasting grotesque shark creatures is surely a notable parallel. Even if Overture’s shark creature wasn’t explicitly inspired by Shark-Giants, Lies of P’s Scrapped Watchman resembles Bloodborne’s Darkbeast Paarl and it wouldn’t be all too alarming if enemies or bosses in the DLC are tackled with other FromSoftware designs in mind. Either way, Lies of P was able to prove that it is leagues greater than a mere Bloodborne clone and Overture will be a terrific opportunity for it to cement that legacy as one of the few excellent Soulslikes not developed by FromSoftware.
