Fishing has been a part of the Trails series since the beginning. The only exception was the first game in the Calvard story arc, Trails Through Daybreak, but fishing has returned for Trails Through Daybreak 2. The mechanics vary depending on the game, but fishing typically involves a quick mini-game that requires you to use bait around a body of water. While fishing is not essential to the story, it is a fun mini-game that players can partake in when they want to take a break from the story, and here is how fishing works in Trails Through Daybreak 2.

Fishing in Trails Through Daybreak 2 Explained
As is common in the Trails series, you will unlock fishing pretty early on in the story. From this point on, you can fish from any large body of water that you come across. The characters in your party will also periodically comment that a spot looks good for fishing as well. Just make sure that you have some fishing bait, or you won’t be able to catch anything. While fishing bait is pretty cheap, you will want to try to get dumplings as they give you a better chance of finding rare fish. Vendors will also periodically sell upgrades for your fishing rod that will make it easier to catch fish as well, so keep an eye out for those.
When you are about to start fishing, you can use the shard search mechanic to see fishing spots. Keep in mind that you don’t need to fish from those specific spots to catch fish, but there are fish that can only be caught in those spots. Once you are ready to fish, cast your line out and wait for an exclamation point to appear.
At that point, pull the fish in to start the mini-game. The goal is to rotate the red arrow so that it is in the highlighted section of the circle. Wait for the silver arrow on the outside of the circle to enter the same highlighted space and then press the button. If timed correctly, you will gain additional time on the bar on the right. If you fill up this bar, you will successfully catch the fish. If you miss three times, the fish gets away.
Each fish has different ranks depending on how long it is. For example, if you catch a Sky Gil that is 11.5 rege in length, it will be Rank C. Alternatively, if you catch a Sky Gil that is 12.4 rege, it will be a Rank B instead. The better the rank of the fish, the better the rewards are for catching it. A Rank C Snow Crab will only reward you with one U-Material, as opposed to a Rank B which rewards you with two U-Materials.
While it may seem like a waste of time in comparison to the main story or exploring Marchen Garten, it is not a bad idea to take time and fish. This is especially the case for any fish that reward U-Material which is needed for upgrading weapons. For achievement hunters, there is an achievement for filling out the fishing section of the notebook.
