However, one must dig to the deepest depths before one can start collecting those small victories in your own garden. Due to how achievements work in this game, you might find yourself a bit confused the first time you go through the game. But don’t worry, as this isn’t a problem that cannot be solved by shoveling.

How To Unlock Achievements

The hidden treasure in A Game About Digging A Hole.

Players will find it odd that they can’t unlock any Steam achievements during their first time going through the game. That’s because you must beat the game once to unlock Achievement Mode. If you don’t, you won’t be able to earn any achievements at all.

Once you reach the treasure, start a New Game through the menu. This will erase your previous saved file, but you’ll finally be able to get the achievements. Aside from your Steam profile, they are also shown in-game on a shelf inside your garage, next to your computer.

If you meet the criteria for any achievement before beating the game once, it’ll be unlocked once you start a new playthrough. Progress is cumulative between playthroughs.

TREASURE

Find the treasure

Complete the game for the first time. The underground is always randomized, but the treasure will always be found below 100m.

Once you reach the final tunnel, you can’t use your Shovel/Drill or any other tool, and must run through the moles to reach the final treasure. Running is easier on the Keyboard than on Controller.

Stonemason

Collect 100 Stones

Stones are the earliest ores you’ll find in the game. You’ll get plenty of these white ores naturally, but if you’re still missing some, just dig for a while in the first few meters of your garden. Having the Drill makes things much easier.

Moneymaker

Earn $20,000

The deepest you get in the hole, the more valuable the ores you find will be, so sell them for some profit. Getting all upgrades won’t be enough to get the whole amount of cash, so you’ll have to continue digging for money for a while.

If you’re going for the Rainbow and the BOOOOM! achievements, you’ll probably end up with 20,000$ along the way.

I AM SHOVEL !

Shovel 4,000 Times

Digging after you get the Drill won’t count toward the total amount. This will force you to go through a second playthrough. Still, it’s very likely to unlock this achievement during your first playthrough.

Old Crate

Open the crate in the garage

There’s a locked crate next to the computer. It can only be opened by finding the two hidden keys inside the hole.

Both keys’ locations are randomized in each playthrough, but your item detector shows you whenever you’re near one of them. They are also always in the first 50 meters you can dig. Find both keys and interact with the crate to unlock it, alongside the achievement.

Wasted

Waste 50 Ores

When you collect an item with a full inventory, the ore is wasted. Waste them 50 times and you’ll unlock this achievement.

This is easier to do in a late-game scenario with the Drill, where you can waste the Stones, Irons, and Coppers you find next to ground level.

TIP: Make sure you’ve gotten the Stonemason already, as wasted ores don’t count as collected.

Rainbow

Collect five Rainbow Ores

Rainbow Ores are extremely rare ores you can find below the 70-meter mark. They’re worth more than Diamonds but are even harder to get by. They become more common during a second playthrough, but it’s still up to luck to find them.

You’ll need to keep exploring all possible areas until you can find enough of them. Chasing for them will likely unlock the Moneymaker achievement as well.

BOOOOM!

Throw 100 Dynamites

Dynamites are one of the few things you can spend your money on after unlocking all upgrades. You’ll need a total of $10,000 to buy enough Dynamites, which is already half of Moneymaker.

TIP: Don’t be too close to the Dynamite’s explosion or you’ll lose some Health.

Long Fall

Fall for at least four seconds

Dig a straight hole where you can jump directly to the bottom without interruptions. This is easier to do after you upgrade the Drill.

Start your hole by the corners to make it as straight as you can. Falling for so long will likely kill you, so make sure you have no ores when attempting this achievement.

The Fastest

Beat the game in under 30 minutes

A speedrun achievement. You might need to attempt it a few times before finally getting it, as you cannot follow a predetermined path.

TIP: You should focus on Battery and Shovel upgrades to get as deep as you can quickly. The game concludes as soon as you escape the moles and find the treasure.
