In this vast world of My Hero Academia, many characters try to prove themselves and not all of them get the attention that is due to them. Neito Monoma from class 1-B of U.A. High School is one of them. Despite all of their skills, Monoma, along with other Class 1-B students, was more in the background and did not attract much attention as students in Class 1-A.

Sekijiro Kan’s Class 1-B consists of students with interesting character peculiarities and burning ambition. Their skills were best seen during the U.A. Sports Festival and the Joint Training Arc; most times they come out as powerful as Class 1-A. However, as the series went on and the plot started to explore various aspects of the society of heroes and their battles with villains, the focus on Class 1-B has faded. In Para-Existential War, these characters did as much as they could but were pushed into the background of the characters’ main arcs.
This point was perhaps detrimental not only to the development of these characters but also to the viewers’ understanding of a broader spectrum of hero training and progression. The Class 1-B characters could have provided a blend of skills and methods on how to be a hero and work as a team.

Neito Monoma, known by the alias Phantom Thief, has one of the quirks named “Copy,” which allows him to copy another individual’s quirk by simply touching them for some time. His quirks and his role as a hero were considered a side character because of this, as he did not possess any powerful quirk of his own; his colleagues and competitors did not consider him a strong contender. Many people doubted his ability to become a hero on his own because his abilities depended on others. Which, to be fair, if you think about it, is arguably one of the strongest quirks ever. You get to copy any of the OP quirks without actually having to live with them forever. Yes, you need to stay in contact to keep using it for a long time, but being able to copy your enemy’s quirks and counter them is OP.
The paradox is that to become heroes, we must act unheroically. Otherwise, we’ll never measure up to those capable of greatness. Emulating our idols isn’t enough. Surely you’ve felt this way before… how the hopes and dreams of childhood grow heavy as burdens? As if we are cursed.
This denial only served to increase his desire to prove himself to the world, which prompted him to study how to efficiently use his quirk in different situations. He imitated the special manifesting ability called the “Warp Gate,” which is actually the quirk of Kurogiri, a Nomu made from Oboro Shirakumo’s body. This replication was used in moving heroes to different battle areas to unleash an aerial attack on the enemies’ positions. The use of such a complicated quirk proved his advancement and he gained confidence from pro heroes.
Also, in the confrontation with the powerful antagonist Shigaraki Tomura, Monoma imitates the Quirk called “Erasure” from Eraser Head. This move was critical in nullifying Shigaraki’s enhanced abilities, providing the heroes with a fighting chance against an otherwise overwhelming adversary. After the final battle with All for One and Shigaraki, the hero’s society faced many challenges as many heroes lost their lives and many retired. But this was the perfect opportunity for Monoma, as he had everything that the new environment demanded and which he had successfully demonstrated in the past. Because he could mimic and employ numerous quirks, he was proven to be quite useful in many sorts of missions. In addition, the events in U.A. High School and the battles that he faced made him become a good leader and think tactfully.
Eight years since the Final War concluded, it was about time for Monoma to reach his deserved spot, and he finally became the No. 10 Pro Hero. This rise from a side character to among the top alongside heroes like Bakugo and Shoto is a testimony to how this man was able to transform, be flexible and dedicate himself to being a superhero. Similar to Monoma at the beginning of the story, a student who is overlooked by his counterparts, fans can witness the possibilities of success for one who remains true to himself and aims for the best.
