Sonic is one of the most recognizable gaming characters ever. Being featured in movies and TV shows has helped him build that fame. Yet, the main reason why he’s so well-known is because he’s featured in an incredible number of games.

Sonic the Hedgehog is always trying to keep the Chaos Emeralds out of evil’s clutches – but why are they so important?

The first game was released in 1991. Since then, barely a year has gone by without a Sonic title. Not all of them have been main entries, as there have been plenty of spin-offs that offer different experiences from the main platformers. However, they’re all still part of the Sonic series. If you count them and the main instalments, here is how many Sonic games there have been.

There Are 114 Sonic Games

Remaster, re-releases, and remakes haven’t been counted.

By this point, 114 Sonic games have been released. This includes every 2D platformer, 3D platformer, Olympic games, arcade games, racing games, and everything else. Yet, it doesn’t include titles set in the Sonic universe that don’t revolve around Sonic. Therefore, 2005’s Shadow the Hedgehog hasn’t counted.

The main 2D platformers account for 22 of the games, while 16 of them are 3D platformers. On top of that, there have been 11 main racing games and nine Olympic ones.

A bunch of the titles haven’t ever been released in the US. This is the case with the games that were part of Sonic Cafe, as this was a mobile service only available in Japan.

27 of the 114 games were released in the 1990s, which is when the series first began. This pales in comparison to the 2000s, though, which saw the release of 53 Sonic games. Sonic Cafe helped with this, as all the games on that service came out during that decade. 26 games were released in the 2010s, while only eight have come out in the 2020s.

There Are 11 Games In The Sonic Universe That Don’t Star Sonic

There are 11 games set in the Sonic universe that don’t revolve around the blue hedgehog. He may still appear in some of them, but he’s not the star.

The first of these types of games was Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, which was released in 1993. It is a falling-block puzzle game, so it’s very different from the standard Sonic titles. This is the theme of non-Sonic Sonic games, as most move away from the series’ signature gameplay.

Tails is the titular protagonist in four of these 11 games, which is more than everyone else. Shadow has two, while Amy, Knuckles, and Chao all have one each. Dr. Robotnik is the titular character of two titles. However, Tails is arguably the main character of Eggman’s Number Guess Panic!, meaning it’s as much of a Tails game as a Robotnik one.
