Avowed: Every Upgrade Item And How To Get Them

There are plenty of upgrade items that you can farm in Avowed, and here’s how you can get each one.

After you finish the tutorial and reach the Dawnshore region, you’ll get your first proper companion in the form of Kai. It’s important to learn everything he can do alongside what you should upgrade for him and when you should use him in party.

Kai’s Abilities, Explained

Every companion you get in Avowed has a set of four abilities with the first one automatically unlocked when they join your party. Three of these are active abilities that you can use in battle while the fourth one is a passive. Here’s everything you can expect from Kai’s abilities:

Fire And Ire

Kai fires his blunderbuss at the target enemy, dealing high stun damage (yellow bar) and diverting their attention to himself for ten seconds. With upgrades, this ability can increase the stun dealt by this ability.

You can also lower its cooldown while gaining the ability to Ignite the target on impact.

Unbending Defense

After charging for a bit, Kai regenerates some of his health while reducing the damage taken from all sources by 25 percent. You can increase the health regenerated while reducing the damage taken further with upgrades.

With the retaliation upgrade, this ability can also unleash a shockwave at the end.

Leap Of Daring

After a few seconds of activation, Kai lands at the target location while slamming the ground, which stuns and taunts nearby enemies. You can increase this ability’s AoE while giving Kai damage and bonus health with upgrades.

Second Wind

Much like the main character, Kai can also revive himself when he’s downed in battle for the first time. You can increase the health he regenerates during Second Wind while also increasing the attack speed with upgrades.

Finally, the Refreshing Wind upgrade can also make all his ability’s cooldown to go away during second wind.

One major difference between upgrading a companion’s abilities and your own in Avowed is that you don’t get as many upgrade points for your companions, which makes it important to focus on the right abilities and upgrades. Here’s how you can upgrade Kai’s abilities to get the most from him:

When Should You Use Kai?

When you reach the Emerald Stairs area in Avowed and progress the story a bit, you’ll unlock your third companion. However, you can only have two companions in your party at a certain time, which means that you have to choose.

Kai, as it might be obvious from his abilities, is the tank companion. He excels at diverting the enemy’s attention to himself while also having damage reduction and health regeneration abilities to tank the damage. However, he won’t be dealing a lot of damage to aid you.

If you’re planning to use Kai solely for the tank, it’s important to get the Second Wind ability since he’ll be getting knocked out a lot.

The best builds to use Kai with are both Ranger and Wizard builds where you have to stay in the back line. As long as you know that you can have a ton of DPS if you’re not pushed by the enemies, Kai will be your best companion. Moreover, you don’t necessarily need a tank for normal and lower difficulties.
