While each member of the Van der Linde gang has their own weapon of choice, personality, and dreams, one of the most important aspects of them all is the horse that they ride through the wild to continue the chase and the life of an outlaw in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The Van der Linde gang in Red Dead Redemption 2 all have distinct personalities and desires, which are somewhat represented by their guns.

Every Van der Linde gang member has an iconic horse that features throughout Red Dead Redemption 2, but how do they rank against each other, and whose horse is clearly the best when it comes to the speediest of encounters?

Arthur Morgan is not listed below as he does not have a canon horse, but a player-dependent one.

14

Nell 2

Uncle’s Tennessee Walker Horse

Coat

Sabino

Speed

3

Acceleration

2

Handling

Standard

Uncle’s horse is known as Nell 2, which obviously shows that he doesn’t really care all that much for his horses if he’s just going to continue to name them as successors to the original. That, or he cares so deeply for his steed that he wants to continue their namesake, as Nell and Uncle seem to get along well even if Uncle doesn’t ride the horse much. Nell 2 is more like a nag simply because Uncle doesn’t ride the horse and instead prefers to laze about, and Nell 2 probably likes doing that too.

13

Maggie

Lenny Summers’ Mustang Horse

Coat

Light Palomino

Speed

3

Acceleration

2

Handling

Standard

Maggie is Lenny’s horse, and while Lenny must take good care of her, it’s not really that obvious considering the low stats of the steed. Maggie has around the same stats as Nell 2, and Lenny is rarely seen interacting with the horse which might go to show his limited experience as an outlaw and a rider.

12

Branwen

Kieran Duffy’s Dutch Warmblood Horse

Coat

Flaxen Roan

Speed

3

Acceleration

3

Handling

Standard

Kieran Duffy loves horses, and it’s obvious that he takes good care of his horse, Branwen, just by looking at the shining fur coat from where Kieran brushes the calming horse, who is often okay with being fed a good treat and given a pet. Branwen isn’t the fastest horse in the gang, but Kieran was never one to try and stand out anyway.

11

Brown Jack

Bill Williamson’s Ardennes Horse

Coat

Brown Roan

Speed

3

Acceleration

3

Handling

Standard

Brown Jack is the largest horse in the Van der Linde gang, and that’s no surprise when one remembers that this horse’s owner is Bill Williamson, the often loud and brash ex-soldier who shoots first and asks no questions later. Brown Jack is loyal to Bill, and the two seem equally heavy and burly to make them the perfect pairing.

10

Taima

Charles Smith’s Appaloosa Horse

Coat

Gray Snowcap Spotted

Speed

3

Acceleration

3

Handling

Standard

Charles isn’t the only man to have ridden on Taima, as Arthur had experienced her quickened speeds before in Ambarino when the gang first reached Colter. Taima is loyal to her rider, and a calm horse that always remains brave – which helps, when Charles Smith is equally as calm, but can certainly have a fierce temper when the situation needs him to be stronger than he already is.

9

Old Boy

John Marston’s Hungarian Half-Bred Horse

Coat

Silver Dark Bay

Speed

3

Acceleration

3

Handling

Standard

John Marston’s first horse was eaten by wolves in Chapter 1, so he managed to get himself a new one which John called: Old Boy. Old Boy and John’s relationship is much like the man’s relationship with Abigail and Jack, as he doesn’t seem to care all that much about the horse, but will still interact with it from time to time. The fact that this is a war horse could also be a reference to John’s special dark brown War Horse with a white mane in 1911 from Red Dead Redemption.

8

Boaz

Javier Escuella’s American Paint Horse

Coat

Gray Overo

Speed

4

Acceleration

4

Handling

Standard

The trusty steed of Javier Escuella is Boaz, a horse that seems to have been around for quite some time considering the bond they share, as Boaz might flinch at gunfire, but the horse will never buck off Javier. It could be possible that the horse helped Javier escape Mexico, but it’s unknown – what is known, is that Boaz is a competent horse worth a ride.

7

Gwydion

Josiah Trelawny’s Appaloosa Horse

Coat

Brown Leopard

Speed

4

Acceleration

3

Handling

Standard

A brown leopard print blesses the Appaloosa horse that Josiah Trelawny often rides both in and out of camp. With a horse like Gwydion, it’s no surprise Trelawny makes such easy and swift escapes, as it has decent stamina and an average speed that proves it’s no lazy nag, but a man of such sophistication, it’s a surprise Gwydion isn’t a more elegant horse.

6

Old Belle

Karen Jones’ Nokota Horse

Coat

Smoky Black

Speed

4

Acceleration

3

Handling

Race

Sweet Old Belle is the smoky black coat horse for Karen Jones, which also has a fairly decent speed for a lady who doesn’t exactly have the same criminal engagements and gunslinging talents of some of the finest people in the camp. Regardless, Old Belle has the handling of a racehorse, and she’s quite the delightful steed for the gang, even if she rarely gets used due to Karen’s affinity for alcohol and staying in the camp.

5

Ennis

Sean MacGuire’s American Standardbred Horse

Coat

Silver Tail Buckskin

Speed

5

Acceleration

5

Handling

Standard

It would only make sense for Ennis and Old Belle to have similar stats, as these two horses are shared between Sean MacGuire and Karen Jones respectively, the two lovers of the Van der Linde camp who can’t seem to keep their hands off of one another. Ennis is noted for his pale blue eyes and his decent stats, which makes him a confident ride for the proud Irishman.

4

Bob

Sadie Adler’s Turkoman Horse

Coat

Gold Dapple

Speed

6

Acceleration

5

Handling

Standard

Sadie Adler lost her farm when the O’Driscolls killed her husband and their farm burned to the ground in Ambarino, along with their stables, but that doesn’t mean Sadie doesn’t know how to make use of a horse. Sadie is talented with guns as much as she is talented as a rider, and Bob proves that with his great speed. Bob is a good horse, even if Sadie doesn’t pay too much attention to him – which is made rather obvious when he’s been given such a random name.

3

Silver Dollar

Hosea Matthews’ Turkoman Horse

Coat

Silver

Speed

6

Acceleration

5

Handling

Standard

The trusted and loyal mount to Hosea Matthews is Silver Dollar, a horse with decent stats when it comes to speed and health, and a horse that doesn’t seem to like the affection of others when it’s not coming from Hosea. Silver Dollar is a reserved horse that usually sticks to itself, and its bond with Hosea isn’t mentioned much, but it’s clearly there.

2

The Count

Dutch Van der Linde’s Arabian Horse

Coat

Albino

Speed

6

Acceleration

6

Handling

Elite

Dutch Van der Linde is always a showman, and it’s no surprise that he would have an albino Arabian horse to call his own. The elegant coat and the small size of this horse provide its elite handling with intense speed and acceleration, but nobody can ride the Count but Dutch. The Count is extremely loyal to Dutch, and anyone who tries to go near this animal even to pet it, the Count will get skittish and frustrated, proving its great bond with Dutch.

1

Baylock

Micah Bell’s Missouri Fox Trotter Horse

Coat

Black

Speed

7

Acceleration

5

Handling

Standard

Baylock is the striking-looking horse ridden into war with Micah Bell on the spurs, and Baylock seems to be the only thing Micah actually cares about, even if that’s not all that much. Baylock is an impressive stallion with the fastest speed of all the gang horses. What’s interesting about Baylock is that his white face, almost like a skull, paired with a striking black coat, makes his appearance rather similar to John’s horse in Red Dead Redemption if he were to have Low Honor and acquire the Dark Horse.
