Summary
- Level 5 spells in Avowed are powerful, such as Grimoire Snap, Bristling Frost, and Crackling Bolt for various uses.
- Wizards in Avowed can utilize passive abilities like Wand Mastery, Bounce, and Blast, enhancing their spellcasting skills.
- Spells like Fireball and Blizzard offer impactful abilities for one-on-one encounters and area-of-effect attacks, respectively.
Level one for the Wizard class is quite stacked in Avowed. Players can unlock seven spells to torture enemies along with an armor-based passive ability. Level five for Wizards in Avowed is less stacked but there are some strong conjurings.

While Avowed’s main quest may be enticing, picking up these early side quests along the way will yield some valuable rewards.
There are more passive abilities in Avowed, too. Wand Mastery will increase the damage Wand-based weapons do. Bounce will reflect Wand magic off of foes and Blast will make more of an impact when players charge their Wands. Finally, Grimoire Mastery is needed to unlock the following five spells so it is a must. That said, these Wizard spells will be ranked based on power and usefulness.

Grimoire Snap
A Librarian’s Greatest Power
- Cost: 35 Essence
- Cooldown: 20 Seconds
Grimoire Snap is an odd spell as it can use an equipped book to slam shut. This will cause the area to erupt in a wave of damage. It’s a good spell to use if players are surrounded by enemies but it doesn’t carry the same magical essence in Avowed as the other level five spells or even some of the level one spells.
That said, Grimoires are some of the best weapons in the game. They come equipped with four spells and players don’t need to use ability points in Avowed’s skill tree to use them. They are user-friendly and rare, so if one comes up, be sure to give it a read even if players don’t unlock Grimoire Snap.

Bristling Frost
Command The Oceans With Your Icy Step
- Cost: 40 Essence
- Duration: 20 Seconds
- Cooldown: 20 Seconds
Bristling Frost is a more versatile spell than Grimoire Snap and it’s one of the best spells in the overall game no matter the level attached. Casting Bristling Frost will engulf the player in a chilly aura which will boost defense similar to the level one spell, Arcane Veil. The difference is that enemies who come close will be damaged. It will be light, but any extra damage players can apply during combat is always welcome in an action RPG.

Skill points are limited in Avowed, and as a result, knowing which abilities to invest in early on will have ripple effects throughout the whole game.
Players can also use Bristling Frost to freeze water in Avowed. Any ice-based spell can freeze water or enemies if enough ice magic is applied. Bristling Frost is special though because players don’t have to cast it at water to freeze it. For example, if players are exploring a beach, they can simply start walking on water and the ocean below will freeze as if players were performing a feat akin to Jesus before his followers. The one downside is that players can’t cast Bristling Frost and then jump into the water as that will result in a dive so there are limitations.

Crackling Bolt
Bounce Lightning Balls Between Foes
- Cost: 50 Essence
- Cooldown: 15 Seconds
Crackling Bolt is like an upgrade to the first-level spell, Jolting Touch. Instead of shooting stream-like jolts of lightning akin to Emperor Palatine from Star Wars, players will shoot an electric ball in Avowed. This ball will ping pong around the battlefield and hit anyone it comes across. In open spaces, this spell is weak as it can often just shoot into space as if to say “I’m free!”
Crackling Bolt is best used then indoors like a building or a cave. Upgrades will give players more chances to hit enemies with the electric orbs. Compared to Jolting Touch, it’s trickier to use but technically stronger. To note, if electric magic touches water, all enemies in that water will be electrocuted. It’s another example of how spells interact with Avowed’s environments more than other magic systems in RPGs.
2
Fireball
Good For One On One Encounters
- Cost: 50 Essence
- Cooldown: 15 Seconds
Fireball is a standard spell for an RPG and honestly, it can look boring upon first impact. It’s not flashy like the level one fire spell, Fan of Flames, but Fireball is a lot stronger against one enemy. The more it gets upgraded, the bigger the impact will be on surrounding enemies. If players dump enough points into it, Fireball can explode like a meteor.

The best part of the spell even on the first tier is the summoning animation which looks like the player is launching a Hadouken from Street Fighter. Fireball is a work in progress for group attacks, but it’s an ace in the hole for bosses provided players can aim well. A steady hand will always win the war.

Blizzard
Rain Ice Down From The Heavens
- Cost: 50 Essence
- Duration: 3 Seconds
- Cooldown: 15 Seconds
Blizzard is an upgrade to Chill Blades which is a level one spell. Chill Blades launched a bunch of icy daggers forward at enemies. Blizzard instead will summon a cloud of icicles to rain down from above on a selected spot for a limited time. With the right direction, players can cover a lot of enemies.
Almost every spell in the game can be guided provided players hold down the summoning button first. That’s an extra tip for those struggling to be the very best wizard or witch players can be. Upgraded, Blizzard can look like a typical day in February for Minnesotans. It has a high chance to freeze enemies too so topping off this spell with a flaming Fireball would be a one-two icy hot combo like no other.
