Despite an emphasis on magic in Avowed, players can use a pure fighter build and still see great success even on the hardest of difficulty settings. If you’d rather solve your problems with brute force at close quarters, don’t worry — there are quite a few ways to build a warrior-type character, and even the ones that don’t rely on magic can be very powerful.
The following build is a physical fighter build that relies on Avowed’s stun mechanic for crowd control and massive burst damage. This guide covers the core items and skills you need for this build, as well as some insight into what makes it work the way it does.

Avowed: Fighter Skill Build
This build strictly focuses on melee combat. In return for forsaking ranged weapons and magic, we become nearly unkillable with Temporary Health and health regeneration on top of our usual block and dodge abilities. Damage output is still quite solid, and if you can constantly upgrade your gear in Avowed, this build can carry you even in the hardest difficulty setting.

Get Barbaric Shout to Rank 3 as soon as you can. This is our main source of survivability, and it’s arguably the best fighter skill in Avowed — when active, your attacks will never bounce off stronger enemies and deal higher Stun damage, and you’ll get Temporary Health equal to 100% of your maximum HP for 25 seconds. When paired with Constant Recover Rank 3, you can regenerate your entire health bar while still being protected by your Temporary Health shield.
The rest of the skills listed above are for improving your DPS and overall quality of life. You can use whichever melee weapon you fancy with this build, but we strongly recommend using one that causes high Stun damage. This way, you can take advantage of Barbaric Shout more efficiently.

If you’re playing on the highest difficulty (or if you’re fighting hard-hitting enemies), use Stelgaer’s Pride
. This automatically casts Barbaric Shout when you take 30% of your HP in damage. This does not put Barbaric Shout on cooldown, which means you can use it again after the effect from the armor set expires. The reason why we only recommend using this on higher difficulties is because enemies rarely deal 30% of your health in damage when playing on lower difficulties (unless they’re much stronger than you).
Use Steel Garrote Plate
for more damage reduction or Engwithan Cuirass
for extra health regeneration.
For Gloves, Vambraces
is great as an offensive option, but if you’re having trouble maintaining health and stamina, stick with Steel Garotte Gauntlets or similar armor pieces. As for Boots, we recommend getting Arcanist’s Boots in Avowed for the bonus healing and movement speed.
Accessories
Anything that increases your Might, Constitution, and Resolve are useful for this build, but once you’re able, replace them with the accessories listed above. Bitter Bonding
is especially useful because of Barbaric Shout’s barrier, and it synergizes with Painter’s Brush
too. Ring of Minor Deflection
is great for absorbing more damage, but you can replace it with a different ring if desired.
Weapons
As mentioned, you can use whichever weapons you prefer. Axes and maces are recommended due to the stun-heavy nature of this build, but getting good items early can be tricky. You can get the Drawn in Winter
axe in Dawnshore by going to the Watcher’s MIrror POI east of Paradis, while Unflinching Duty can be obtained early in the game during the fight with the Dreamthrall Bear as part of the main quest.
Horsecutter
is a two-handed sword that can be found in the second region, Emerald Stair. You can find it in a cove along the southern coast near Fior mes Iverno. Speak with the skeleton sitting on the throne on the beach, then defeat his minions to win the sword.
Best Companions
This build is completely self-reliant, which means you can bring any of Avowed’s companions with you. We do recommend bringing Kai along, as he can tank enemies extremely well while simultaneously providing excellent crowd control. He’ll give you plenty of opportunities to deal damage without taking any damage yourself.
Giatta is also a great companion to have along with this build. She can provide healing and damage reduction, two things you’ll need a lot of during a fight. Also, she can activate Essence Generators, saving you the hassle of throwing grenades or switching to a spellbook.
