A notable gaming financial analyst has predicted how much the Nintendo Switch 2 is going to cost. Many questions have been answered about Nintendo’s next mainline console, with more information regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 set to be revealed during an upcoming Nintendo Direct livestream on April 2. When the console was first shown off back in January, fans finally got to see the system itself, as well as a short look at a new Mario Kart game that is in development for the Switch 2.

One thing gamers are likely eager to learn is exactly how much they are going to have to save up to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 when it finally launches later this year. There have been many leaks and insider predictions about the Nintendo Switch 2’s price over the past month or so, with many saying that the system could cost somewhere around $400 or $500. In comparison, the original Switch was priced at $299.99 when it launched in 2017, with later models remaining roughly around the same ballpark.

Early Nintendo Switch 2 Units Are Reportedly Being Sold on the Black Market

Recent reports suggest early Nintendo Switch 2 units are sold on the Chinese black market, though their price may deter fans.

Joost van Dreunen, author of One Up – Creativity, Competition, and the Global Business of Video Games and co-founder of the Nielson-owned games market research firm SuperData Research, believes that the Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $399 at retail. In his latest SuperJoost Playlist newsletter (via Nintendo Life), Dreunen explained that this price point seems like the most logical based on current market dynamics and platform positioning strategy, placing the Nintendo Switch 2’s price lower than its immediate competitors, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while still being somewhat higher than the original Switch.

Analyst Thinks Nintendo Switch 2 Will Cost $399

Dreunen also stated that while there might be potential issues with tariffs and trade wars in the coming months, Nintendo will likely aim to maintain its usual balance of profit and affordability with the Switch 2. He believes that the Nintendo Switch 2’s backward compatibility with old Switch games and the console’s close similarities with its predecessor are a sign that Nintendo is focusing more on retaining its current fans and slowly moving players toward the Switch 2 rather than gaining immediate hardware sales.

Lastly, Dreunen says that Nintendo isn’t too worried about leveraging Nintendo Switch Online as much as Sony and Microsoft do their respective subscription services, nor will PC-based competitors like Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally threaten Nintendo’s profits much due to their higher price points. This is all just an educated guess at this point, and gamers will probably have to wait until April 2 to find out how much the Nintendo Switch 2 will cost.
